SM, East Henderson battle to overtime tie

Smoky Mountain and East Henderson battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie in Western Athletic Conference soccer action March 27 at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

Neither team scored in regulation with the goals coming less than three minutes apart during the first extra period.

“We created most of our dangerous opportunities late in the game and nearly won it,” Coach Stephaen Delor said. “We had three shots go just inches wide of the goal in the last six minutes.”

After nearly 85 scoreless minutes, the Lady Eagles broke through midway through the first overtime when Meredith Saine scored with an assist from Teresa Lange.

“A cross was made from the left in front of the goal, and their player pushed it in from 2 yards out,” Delor said.

The Lady Mustangs tied it in the 88th minute when Jordan Youmans scored from 12 yards out.

“The ball had been shot by one of our players,” Delor said. “Jordan forcefully gathered the rebound, and stuck it into the goal.”

The coach was pleased with how the players responded to being down 1-0.

“The lesson of this game was to not wait until we have our backs against the wall to play,” he said.

SM had a 19-8 advantage in shots. Amy Haggard made 10 saves for the Lady Mustangs, and East’s Mary Margaret Burdett had nine.

“We dominated at times, but we couldn’t finish,” Delor said.
