Joan Buchanan
Joan Buchanan, 70, of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., died Saturday, March 25, 2006, at St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, Wash.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 31, in Lemley Chapel with the Rev. Leon Meyer of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery.
She was born in Sedro-Woolley on May 6, 1935, and graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School in 1952. She worked as a clerk at Malone Music and JC Penney, and worked 25 years with Oliver-Hammer Clothing. She was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church in Burlington, Wash., where she was a member for 54 years. She enjoyed genealogy research and shopping. She was a daughter of the late Axel and Phyllis Hammond Jensen.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Fremont “Poppy” Buchanan, who died in September; one son, Jon; one brother, Neil Jensen; and one great-granddaughter.
Surviving are one son, Jeff Buchanan of Sedro-Woolley; one daughter, Julia Sosa of Sedro-Woolley; one brother, Roy Jensen of San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Evadeen Jenkins
Evadeen Jenkins, 63, of Brevard, died Friday, March 24, 2006, at Kingsbridge House in Brevard.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, in Pisgah Gardens with the Rev. Don Riddle officiating.
She was a native of Jackson County and a daughter of the late Thomas Mitchell and Sadie Glenda Mathis Hoxit.
Surviving are three sons, Clint T. Hall of Pisgah Forest, Chuck Morgan of Jackson County and John Jenkins of Brevard; one daughter, Martha Jenkins of Brevard; two sisters, Erlean McClain and Janice Sue Smith, both of Brevard; and several grandchildren.

Sandra McGehee
Sandra Anne Frederick McGehee, 63, of Pee Wee Branch Road, Sylva, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006, at her residence after an extended illness.
Services will be announced at a later date.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She was a daughter of the late Charles and Ester Frederick.
Surviving are her husband, William S. McGehee; one daughter, Dawn Shambre of Morganton; one son, Darren McGehee of Provincetown, Mass.; one sister, Anne Studwell of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; and two brothers, Charles Frederick of Morganton and Gene Frederick of Cape Coral, Fla.

Mary Rector
Mary Louise Clayton Rector, 88, of Asheville, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher after a long illness.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 2, at Andrews First Baptist Church with Dr. Chester Jones and Dr. Tommy Lamb officiating. Burial was in Valleytown Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Terry Postell, J.T. Postell, Robert Revis, Bill Loughlin, Christopher Loughlin and Bob Loughlin.
She was born Dec. 22, 1917, in Henderson County, and lived most of her life in Andrews until moving to Charlotte and then to Asheville. She was a graduate of Asheville Normal School, and worked for more than 30 years as a teacher in the Cherokee County School System, retiring in 1978. She was a member of Andrews First Baptist Church and Cornerstone Baptist Church of Charlotte, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a daughter of the late George W. and Lula Lance Clayton.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Rector, who died May 8, 1994; and one daughter, Gladys L. Loughlin.
Surviving are two sons, Clyde W. Rector of Greenville, S.C., and George Rector of Cullowhee; one brother, George Clayton of Asheville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Troy Childers
Troy Childers, 79, of Whittier’s Conleys Creek community, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at his residence.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at Whittier Church of God with the Rev. Ned Pressley officiating. Burial was in Union Hill Cemetery.
He was born and raised in Swain County, and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. He retired from Pontiac Motor Division after 30 years and was a member of Whittier Church of God, where he was active in many construction projects and was on the building committee. He was a son of the late Robert Lee Childers and Rosie Wood Childers.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Nathaniel Banks and Clyde Childers; and one sister, Edith Woodard.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Clara Deloris Winters Childers; one son, Bobby Childers of Hendersonville; two sisters, Oma Parris of Bryson City and Ruth Wilkey of Sylva; and one brother, Samuel Childers of Burlington, Ky.

Willa Cline
Willa Mae Bryson Cline, 84, of Pulaski, Va., died Saturday, April 1, 2006, in Pulaski Community Hospital.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 3, at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. David Lones officiating. Burial was in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin, Va.
She was born Sept. 13, 1921, in Jackson County, and was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Pulaski. She was the daughter of the late Mary Pearl Broom Bryson and William Wadsworth Bryson.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Adam Russell Cline; and one brother, Denver Talmage Bryson.
Surviving are one son, Denver Russell Cline of Pulaski; and two grandchildren.

Nina Monroe
Nina Mitchell Monroe, 78, of Laurens, S.C., died Monday, April 3, 2006, at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center.
Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, S.C., and were followed by a 2 p.m. memorial service at Laurens First Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member.
She was born in East LaPorte and was retired from Laurens School District #55. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Ervin and Nanny Elizabeth Wheatly Mitchell.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Paul Monroe; three brothers, Glenn Mitchell, Darrell Mitchell and Anson Mitchell; and one sister, Pauline Mitchell.
Surviving are three daughters, Paula Ann Monroe of Taylors, S.C., Marcia Kay Monroe of Laurens and Crystal M. Frye of Spartanburg; one son, Kenneth Ray Monroe of Burke, Va.; one brother, Ray Mitchell of Florida; and five grandchildren.

Etta Stephenson
Etta Lola Stephenson, 94, of Bryson City’s Alarka community, died Thursday, March 30, 2006, after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 2, at East Alarka Baptist Church, of which she was the oldest living member, with the Rev. Lowell York officiating. Burial was in Brendle Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Michael Burnette, Kevin Burnette, Arnold Kirkland, Troy Kelly, Jeff Cochran and Douglas Layman.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Swain County. She was a daughter of the late William B. and Elizabeth M. Rathbone Stephenson.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Mae Stephenson; and four brothers, Oscar, Tom, Paul and Bennett Stephenson.
Surviving are three daughters, Joyce Burnette of Bryson City, Mildred Bryson of Waynesville and Marie Davis of Sylva; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

John Stiwinter
John Randall Stiwinter Sr., 66, of the Marjorie McCune Center in Black Mountain, formerly of Jackson County, died Sunday, April 2, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Wesley Hooper officiating. Burial was in Stewart Cemetery.
A native of Jackson County, he had lived in Buncombe County for the last five years. He retired as a supervisor with Southeast Toyota and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a son of the late John Grover and Sally Alma Blackburn Stiwinter.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Hall Stiwinter, who died in 1994.
Surviving are two daughters, Desiree Stiwinter and Sonja Stiwinter, both of Asheville; one son, John Randall Stiwinter Jr. of Asheville; two sisters, Patsy Gaulden of Rock Hill, S.C., and Sandra Kay Hooper of Athens, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
