Mustangs blast East in conference game
Daniel Buchanan and Grant Schallock both drove in four runs Friday leading Smoky Mountain to a 12-2 Western Athletic Conference baseball victory over East Henderson at the SM field.
The game was called in the bottom of the sixth due to the 10-run rule.
“It was a good win for us,” Coach Ron Yount said. “We hit the ball real well. It was a good team effort.”

Buchanan had four hits in four at-bats, and Schallock was two of three.
Matt Hawkins (1-2) pitched a two-hitter. He walked three and struck out seven.
The Eagles scored first when Anthony Johnson delivered a two-run double in the opening inning.
The Mustangs (3-5, 1-2) cut the gap to 2-1 in the third as Jared Deitz tripled and scored on Coleman Corzine’s sacrifice fly.
Buchanan’s RBI double produced a 2-2 tie in the fourth.
SM went up 7-2 with five runs in the fifth. Doubles by Michael Freeman and Corzine put runners at second and third with nobody out. D.J. Brooks doubled in both runners. After an error, Schallock had a two-run triple. Buchanan followed with an RBI single.
The Mustangs clinched the win with five runs in the sixth. Walks to Deitz, Freeman and Brooks loaded the bases with one out. Hawkins had an RBI single, and Schallock hit a two-run double. Buchanan ended the game with a two-run triple.
Skyler Hill, the first of four East pitchers, took the loss.
The Mustang JVs improved to 3-4 with a 15-12 win at East. They led 10-1 in the third only to see the Eagles pull into a 12-12 tie. SM won it with three runs in the sixth.
“Everybody contributed with their hitting and played great defense,” Coach Scott Manshack said.
He singled out Adam Henson for his offense.
Sammy Matthews started on the mound and pitched well, Manshack said. Jared Jones also performed well as he threw two shutout innings for the win.
