Lady Mustangs win over N. Henderson
Smoky Mountain evened its Western Athletic Conference soccer record at 1-1-1 with a 3-1 victory over North Henderson on March 29 at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.
“It was a nice win for us,” Coach Stephaen Delor said. “We played well, but North Henderson nearly scored twice late in the game. With five minutes left in the game a ball was directed toward the goal, but Jordan Youmans made a tremendous play. A ball bounced off the bar with 10 seconds left. We have to stay focused until the final whistle. Our players relaxed a bit, and it nearly cost us.”
The Lady Mustangs scored first when Jenna Carpenter connected in the ninth minute.
“The play started when Kelly Brannigan made an overhead cross into the box,” Delor said. “Abi Jones then passed it square to Jenna at the top of the box. She slid the ball past the keeper into the net.”
SM made it 2-0 on Kelly Brannigan’s goal in the 15th minute.
“Their keeper came out to clear it, but mis-kicked the ball right to Kelly, who went around a defender to score from the right,” the coach said.
He credited Sarah Newbold with putting pressure on the keeper to cause the poor kick.
The Lady Knights cut the gap to 2-1 at halftime with a goal in the 35th minute.
“I will take the responsibility for that goal,” Delor said. “I yelled out instructions to one of our defenders at the wrong time. That caused a moment of confusion between our keeper and defender and allowed North Henderson to score.”
Newbold scored the game’s final goal in the 48th minute.
Jenna Carpenter took a free kick from 35 yards away. Meagan Green then one-touched the ball to Newbold, who was unmarked and lobbed the ball over the keeper’s head from 7 yards out.
The Lady Mustangs dominated play with 20 shots to eight by North. SM’s Amy Haggard made nine saves.
Youmans, Green, Chelsea Parham and Megan Mileti were singled out for their play.
