Hunter will speak at Hall of Fame Banquet
Larry Hunter, Western Carolina’s men’s basketball coach, will be the speaker at the 14th annual Jackson County Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet.
The banquet and induction ceremony are planned for 5 p.m. Sunday, April 23 at Lil’ Harvey’s in Dillsboro Court.
He led the Catamounts to a 13-17 record in his first season on a rebuilding program at WCU.
In 26 years as a head coach, Hunter has a 522-241 record ranking him 14th among active coaches in the country.
He was head coach at Wittenberg for 13 years and 12 years at Ohio.
In the four years prior to coming to Western, he was an assistant at N.C. State. For the last three of those years, he was associate head coach.
He was nation al Division III coach of the year at Wittenberg in 1977 and Mid-American Conference coach of the year at Ohio in 1994.
His 1994-95 Ohio team won the preseason National Invitational Tournament.
Hunter is a 1971 graduate of Ohio.
This year’s inductees are Lisa Bateman, Albert Hartline and Salem Woody Wood.
The 1993 Smoky Mountain High state 3-A championship volleyball team will be honored.
Outstanding senior athletes will be named from both county high schools, and scholarships will be presented.
