Fire destroys home on Rhodes Cove
By Derek Hodges
A fire that started around midnight Tuesday (April 4) destroyed a local man’s home.
According to Sylva Fire Chief Mike Beck, the blaze consumed a trailer on Rhodes Cove that was owned by Arthur Buchanan III.
“By the time we got the call I think the trailer was pretty well gone,” Beck said. “We had it contained within 10 minutes, though.”
The fire left only rubble of the camping trailer Buchanan was inhabiting, Beck said. It also destroyed a nearby car and melted the siding on a neighboring mobile home, which is owned by Buchanan’s parents, Beck said. There were no injuries reported.
The Sylva Fire Department was assisted in fighting the blaze by the Balsam and Cullowhee departments. Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies, members of the Sylva Police Department and WestCare EMS also were on the scene.
The cause of the blaze is unknown and may be difficult to determine because of the amount of damage, Beck said. However, the Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation, he said.
