East Henderson nips SM in seventh inning

East Henderson scored two runs in the top of the seventh Friday breaking a 1-1 tie for a 3-1 Western Athletic Conference softball victory over Smoky Mountain at Webster.

Heather Brown singled to start the seventh, advanced on an error and scored on Brittany Crook’s single giving the Lady Eagles the lead.

Laura McDowell limited the Lady Mustangs (4-6 , 1-1) to two hits, both singles by Rachel Stewman.

“With two hits, you aren’t going to win very many ballgames,” Coach Mark Taylor said.

The Lady Eagles scored in the top of the fourth on Brown’s RBI single.

SM tied it in the bottom of the fourth as Stewman singled, advanced on Jamie Hyatt’s sacrifice and a passed ball, and scored on Ashlee Stephens’ RBI grounder.

The Lady Mustangs missed a golden opportunity to score in the second when they loaded the bases with no outs, but McDowell struck out the next three batters.

Brown and Crook both had two hits for East.

Megan Taylor pitched for SM. She allowed eight hits and no walks while striking out five.
