Western claims win over Gardner-Webb

Western Carolina claimed an 8-4 non-conference baseball victory over Gardner-Webb on March 22 at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium.

Blake Murphy was three of four with four RBIs to lead the Catamounts. Tim Hallam also had three hits, and Steven Strausbaugh added two.

The Bulldogs struck first as Matt Maloney doubled home a run and Jeremy McCann had an RBI single making it 2-0 in the first.

WCU responded with three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good. Two of the runs scored on errors, and Murphy had an RBI single.

Murphy’s two-run homer extended the margin to 5-2 in the third.

Daniel Cooke’s homer cut the gap to 5-3 in the fourth.

A bases-loaded walk to Jason Haynes and an error put the Cats up 7-3 in the fifth.

G-W took advantage of two errors in the sixth to trim the deficit to 7-4.

Western got that run back in the seventh on Murphy’s RBI double.

WCU reliever Tyler Johnson (2-0) was the winning pitcher.

Bulldog starter Jonathon Ban took the loss.

G-W’s Tyler Johnson had three hits in four at-bats.
