REMEMBER TO READ the poems by Scotts Creek students that are featured this week on the N.C. Arts Council Web page, www.ncarts.org. Once at the site, click on “Poet Laureate” and then on the link for “Poet of the Week.” There you’ll find poems by Scotts Creek eighth-graders and their teacher, Phil Woody, written during a visit to the school by North Carolina’s poet laureate, Kay Byer of Cullowhee. A RECEPTION HONORING N.C. Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue will be held on Saturday, April 1, from 2 until 4 p.m. in the Grandroom of Hinds University Center on the campus of Western Carolina University. Perdue, the second highest-ranking elected official in North Carolina, and the highest-ranking elected female office-holder in the state, has focused her efforts on improving public education, child health and welfare, and benefits and services to the state’s military personnel and their families, said Vera Guise, visiting lecturer in WCU’s department of political science and public affairs. “She serves as a role model to women across the state who are considering seeking elected office,” Guise said. Sponsored by the 11th Congressional District of Democratic Women, the Jackson County Democratic Women, the WCU department of political science and public affairs and the WCU Public Policy Institute, the reception is free and open to the public. THE INSPIRATIONS, founded by Martin Cook of Caney Fork, will sing at East Sylva Baptist Church Sunday night, April 9, at 6 p.m. There is no charge for admission, but a love offering will be taken during the service.
CLASSIC COUNTRY MUSIC AND DANCING will be on tap at Barkers Creek Community Center this Saturday, April 1, from 7 until 11 p.m. The Smoky Mountain Drifters will perform, and admission is $5 for adults, with kids 14 and under admitted for free. Concessions will be available.
ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEYS Reid Taylor and Pam Smith recently completed a three-day workshop on driving while impaired detection, arrests and trials. Area law enforcement personnel, including N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Mike McLeod, also attended. “Conferences like this are helpful in better preparing prosecutors and officers in the effort to remove drunk drivers from our highways. The team effort approach enables officers to gain a perspective of the prosecutors’ thinking and prosecutors to understand the thinking of road officers when DWI arrests are made,” said District Attorney Mike Bonfoey.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY plans a sale of household items Friday and Saturday, April 7-8, at the Glenville Community Center. Proceeds will go toward building Habitat homes. CLINGMAN’S DOME observation tower, the tower itself and the restrooms are closed until May 13 to allow for repaving of the trail. The paved trail is in need of repaving for safety reasons. The Clingman’s Dome Road and the Dome parking lot (elevation 6,311 feet) will open for the season as scheduled Saturday, April 1. Hikers may still access the Appalachian Trail and the other hiking trails normally reached from the Clingman’s Dome area, but they will have to get to them via the Forney Ridge Trail head, which is located immediately adjacent to the parking lot.
NORTH CAROLINA natives Matt King of Hendersonville and Anna Owens of Macclesfield will join Sarah Majors and Phillip Lammonds at Balsam Mountain Inn for the next “Songwriters in the Round” session this Saturday, April 1. The event will be in the inn’s 100-seat restaurant and is accompanied by a gourmet dinner buffet. It begins at 7:30 p.m. Cover charge is $10 per person, plus dinner (about $25).
