James Burton
James Thomas Burton Jr., 47, of Lawrenceville, Ga., died Tuesday, March 21, 2006.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, in the Gwinnett Chapel of Wages & Sons Funeral Home with the Revs. Duke Forster and Mike Riley. Burial was in Gwinnett Memorial Park in Lawrenceville.
He owned and operated Little Jimmy’s Meat Market in Dacula, Ga. He served a police officer in Lawrenceville and Norcross, Ga., and as a deputy in the Gwinnett Sheriff’s Department. He was a son of James T. Burton Sr. and Wylene Burton of Dacula.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William G. and Annie Lee Burton.
Surviving are his wife, Linda A. Burton; two sons, Jason L. Burton and A.J. Maddalena, both of Winder, Ga.; two daughters, Amy Burton of Dacula and Michelle L. Maddalena of Dawsonville, Ga.; one brother, Larry W. Burton of Dacula; one sister, Melinda Crowe, of Dacula; grandparents, J.P. and Jessie M. Toney of Monroe, Ga.; and one granddaughter.
Edna Powell
Edna Powell, 94, of East Flat Rock, died Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at Pardee Care Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Jeff Powell and Jim Ed Powell officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Tony Woodard, Randy Woodard, Van George, Randy Ammons, Doug Powell and Mark Key.
She was born in New Brunswick, Canada and had lived in Henderson County for the past 18 years. She had worked in Peekskill, N.Y. as a registered nurse for 14 years. She was a daughter of the late Charles A. and Beatrice Coy Stewart.
She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Fred DeBoo and Worley Powell; three brothers, Earle, Gordon and Charles Stewart; and one sister, Alice Robinson.
Surviving are her stepdaughter, Gwen Herron of Madison Heights, Mich.; and one sister, Helen Jarvis of Riverview, New Brunswick.

Patsy All
Patsy Parris All, 71, of Salem, Va., died Monday, March 20, 2006.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at the Salem Church of Christ, of which she was a member, with Mike Flinchum officiating. Burial was in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, W. Frank All.
Surviving are two sons, W. Frank All Jr. of Manassas, Va., and Perry Olen All of Middleburg, Va.; two sisters, Barbara Setchell of Sebring, Fla., and Bleakadee Franklin of Sylva; and seven grandchildren.

David Howell
David Hugh Howell, 81, of Sparrow Valley Road, Whittier, died unexpectedly Sunday, March 26, 2006.
Services were scheduled to be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, of which he was a member, with Brother Dennis Miller officiating. Burial will be at Thomas Memorial Cemetery at a later date. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kingdom Hall.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired self-employed carpenter and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was the son of the late Horace and Annie Battle Howell.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Katherine Queen Howell, and a sister, Betty.
Surviving are two daughters, Teresa Smoker of Sylva and Sandra Howell of Bryson City; two sons, Kenneth Howell of Sylva and Jim Howell of Whittier; and two sisters, Jean Liberatore of Whittier and Judy Howell of Franklin.

Mary Blake
Mary Brown Blake, 81, of Sylva, died Friday, March 24, 2006, after a period of declining health.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at Sylva First Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Dr. John Bunn and Earl Holden officiating.
She was past president of the Pilot Club in Ackerman, Miss., and a past member of the Mississippi Association of Educators. She was the daughter of the late John Russell Brown and Deborah Obera Davis Brown.
She was also preceded in death by two grandchildren.
Surviving are her husband, C.E. Blake Jr.; one daughter, Deborah Blake of Ackerman; one son, Randy Blake of Sylva; one brother, Johnny A. Brown of Tunnel Hill, Ill.; one sister, Martha N. Brown Farrish of Yazoo City, Miss.; and two great-grandchildren.

Brittany Dugan
Brittany Nichole Dugan, 19, of Dugan Road, Cherokee, died unexpectedly Friday, March 24, 2006.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 27, at Bethabara Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Mitchell Smiley and Danny Lambert officiating. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery.
Born in Hiawassee, Ga., she was a lifelong resident of Swain County. She was a 2005 graduate of Cherokee High School and a student at Southwestern Community College. An avid University of North Carolina Tar Heels fan, she enjoyed beading. She was a waitress at Riverside Cafe.
Surviving are her father, Dean Dugan of Cherokee; her mother, Angela McKinney of Cherokee; two sisters, Ashely Dugan and Kristin McGaha, both of Cherokee; paternal grandparents, Joyce C. and Jerry W. Dugan of Cherokee; and maternal grandparents, Shirley McKinney of Apalachicola, Fla., and Betty and George McKinney of Blue Ridge, Ga.

Lucille Beck
Lucille Jenkins Beck, 81, of Cherokee’s Birdtown community, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at her residence.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 26, at Bethabara Baptist Church with the Rev. Mitchell Smiley officiating. Burial was in Swain Memorial Park.
A native of Cherokee, she was the daughter of the late Myrtle and Crawford Jenkins. She was a graduate of Mars Hill College and was owner of Jenkins Grocery, a business built by her family more than 60 years ago, which she operated until her retirement. She was active in Bethabara Baptist Church and Cherokee Senior Citizens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jarvis “Jerry” Beck.
Surviving are two daughters, Jerri Beck Crowe of Birmingham, Ala., and Diane B. Hyatt of Cherokee; and two grandchildren.

Troy Childers
Troy Childers, 79, of Whittier’s Conleys Creek Community died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at his residence.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, March 30), at Whittier Church of God with the Rev. Ned Pressley officiating. Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, at the church.
