Errors help Mounties to win over Mustangs
Tuscola took advantage of 10 Smoky Mountain errors in rolling to a 16-3 non-conference baseball victory on March 22 at the SM field.
“We didn’t come to play,” Coach Ron Yount said. “It showed even when we were taking infield and outfield. It carried over into the game, and we started making errors.”
The Mountaineers scored in all seven innings. They started in the first on an RBI double by Corey Stubbs, who was three of five on the day.
They scored a run in the second and two in the third, all without a hit, for a 4-0 advantage.
The Mustangs cut the gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the third. Michael Freeman and D.J. Brooks both singled and scored on a double by Matt Hawkins. Grant Schallock followed with an RBI double.
Tuscola regained control with four runs in the fourth thanks in part to four errors. Stubbs had an RBI double in the frame as the lead reached 8-3.
Derrick Whitmire’s sacrifice fly put the Mounties up 9-3 in the fifth.
They made it 11-3 in the sixth on Stubbs’ homer plus an error.
A three-run double by David Sherrill was the big blow in the seventh when Tuscola scored five times. Zack Shepherd had an RBI single with the last run coming on an error.
Nick Jones pitched the first six innings for the win. He struck out 11.
Grant Schallock (0-1), who lasted into the fourth inning, took the loss.
Last Monday’s game with Murphy was rained out and has not been rescheduled.
