Brevard edges SM to open conference play
Mary Hollingsworth scored the game’s only goal at the 46:45 mark as Brevard nipped Smoky Mountain 1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference soccer opener on March 22 at Brevard.
The goal came from 14 yards out off an assist by Allison Hawkins.
“There was a cross from the right side to the opposite part of the field,” Coach Stephaen Delor said. “It was a well-executed play.”
Brevard had a 14-5 edge in shots. Amy Haggard made eight saves for the Lady Mustangs (1-6, 0-1). Victoria Mosser had two saves for the Lady Devils.
“The team was ready to compete against Brevard,” Delor said. “We dominated the first half, and they dominated the second half.”
At the end of the game, Delor said the players knew it was a game they could have won.
“The girls realized we had a serious lack of team unity,” he said. “They are now working to get to know each other better on and off the field and are doing things together.”
Friday’s game at Hendersonville was called off due to inclement weather and will likely not be made up.
