Tuckasegee man dies in Friday night wreck

By Carey Phillips

One person was killed and another remains in critical condition at an Asheville hospital as a result of a two-car accident Friday night on N.C. 107 south of Cullowhee Valley School.

Manuel Martinez Morales, 29, of Fred Smith Road, Tuckasegee, died at the scene of the wreck, according to Trooper Brian Parker of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Morales was traveling north in a 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier when he crossed the center line and struck a 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier head-on, according to Parker. Alcohol was a factor in the wreck, the trooper said.

The southbound 1995 Cavalier was being driven by Amber Kimberly Brown, 19, of Sylva. She was airlifted to Mission Hospitals and was listed in critical condition Tuesday afternoon.

Two passengers in the Brown vehicle were also taken to Mission. Joshua Brown, 28, of Cullowhee, was airlifted and was released Monday. Austin Brown, 8, of Bryson City, was transported by ambulance and was discharged Tuesday.
