JEFF GRAY of Raleigh, son of Sylva Herald publishers Jim and Marilyn Gray, has joined the law firm of Rose Rand Attorneys with offices in Raleigh and Wilson. Formerly a partner in Holt York McDarris & High in Raleigh, Gray will continue his practice in the acquisition, development, leasing and disposition of real estate, zoning and land use law, including condemnation and boundary and title disputes, surface water environmental issues, and municipal law.

EMMA WERTENBERGER is seeking information about the Sylva Collegiate Institute and its graduating class of 1926. She found a notebook that once belonged to Edna Monteith in the old Monteith house that the town of Dillsboro hopes to restore as a museum. Jackson County members of that class included, in addition to Monteith: Lillie McGaha, Sylva; Chas. Bumgarner, Beta; Earl Ezell, Whittier; Mabel Morgan, Sylva; Mary Chastain, Sylva; Bertie Ella Bryson, Beta; and Edith Buchanan, Sylva. ATTENTION CANDIDATES: The Sylva Herald will publish one free announcement for each candidate for political office. March 30 is the last issue in which the newspaper will include such announcements, which means that Monday, March 27, at noon is the final deadline for candidates to submit their information.
FAIRVIEW’S TALENT SHOW will be tonight (Thursday) at 7 p.m. at Southwestern Community College. Donations will be accepted for the Annie Ripley Gehring Scholarship Fund. This money will send one student from Fairview to a performing arts camp this summer, according to school music teacher Amanda Stewart.
PENUMBRA GALLERY will offer digital photography workshops Saturdays, April 1 and April 8, from 10 a.m. until noon. Participants will learn the basics of the digital camera and digital photography in general. This introductory class is for photographers who don’t know anything about digital cameras or who know a little but are still frustrated with their results, said Penumbra owner Matthew Turlington. This course is also recommended for those without digital who would like to learn more about them.
