Nell Dunn
Nell Brown Harper Dunn, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., formerly of Sylva, died Saturday, March 18, 2006, at Franke Home at Mount Pleasant.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday, March 23) at Sylva First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, at Moody Funeral Home.
She was born Nov. 5, 1920, in Clover, S.C., and was a homemaker. She joined Sylva Presbyterian Church in 1947 and was a member of Women of the Church and the Morning Circle. She served as a Sunday school teacher and was a member of the choir for nearly 30 years. She enjoyed arts and crafts, and was a founding member of Dogwood Crafters. She was a daughter of the late Carl Brown and Nannie Dickson Harper.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Jackson Freeman Dunn, who died in 2002; and one sister, Frances Harper Johnston.
Surviving are one son, John Fortune Dunn of Mt. Pleasant; one daughter, Katherine Dunn Moses of Whittier; two brothers, James Shields Harper of Fayetteville and Wrightsville Beach and Carl Brown Harper Jr. of Mt. Pleasant; four sisters, Millie Harper Penley Dickerson and Anne Harper Bray, both of York, S.C., Mary Elizabeth Harper Sutherland of Clinton, S.C., and Nancy Harper Biggerstaff of Spartanburg, S.C.; and one grandson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Presbyterian Home for Children, 80 Lake Eden Rd., Black Mountain, NC 28711.

Betty George
Betty L. George, 71, of Cherokee, died Saturday, March 18, 2006.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at Yellowhill Baptist Church with the Revs. James “Bo” Parris, James Bradley and Roland Whitaker officiating. Burial was in Screamer Family Cemetery.
She was a homemaker and craftsman. She enjoyed bead work, and was a member of Qualla Co-Op and Acquoni Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Cain Screamer and Polly Saunooke.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Newman George.
Surviving are one son, Charles Earl George of Cherokee; two daughters, Barbara and Suzi, both of Cherokee; one sister, Jean Reed of Cherokee; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Otha Moore
Otha Harte Moore, 102, of Kannapolis, died Sunday, March 19, 2006, at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord after a brief illness.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, in the chapel of Whitley’s Funeral Home in Kannapolis with Dr. Jim Harris officiating. Burial was in Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis.
She was born Jan. 14, 1904, in Pacolet, S.C. She graduated from Pacolet High School and attended Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C., and Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C. She earned her teaching certificate and taught middle grades at Gilboa Grammar School in Marshville, where she also served as principal. She also later taught at Mountain Springs. She moved to Kannapolis in 1935, where she worked for Cannon Mills Co. for about 10 years and later worked in retail positions. After retiring in the early 1970s, she enjoyed traveling across the country. She was a founding member of Memorial Baptist Church in Kannapolis, where she taught Sunday school, and played the organ and piano. She was a member of Kannapolis Book Club for many years. She was the daughter of the late William T. Harte and Mamie Fowler Harte.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Bryce Moore, who died in 1991.
Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Bost of Concord; two sons, Jim of Sylva and Tom of Charlotte; one brother, Cecil Harte of Hilton Head, S.C.; three grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
Memorials may be made to Memorial Baptist Church, 1785 Dale Earnhardt Blvd., Kannapolis, NC 28083; or to the charity of one’s choice.
Eva Frady
Eva B. Frady, 90, of Cullowhee, died Saturday, March 18, 2006.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, at Pine Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnny Norris, Wesley Hooper and Everett Wilson officiating. Burial was in Pine Creek Cemetery.
She was a homemaker and gardener. She was a daughter of the late Govan Stewart and Clara Belle Webster.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, William McKelly Frady; one son, Junior Lyle Coggins; five brothers; and one sister.
Surviving are four sons, Homer Stewart, Jimmy Frady and Johnny Frady, all of Cullowhee, and Jerry Frady of Franklin; two daughters, Willa Mae Moses of Franklin and Mamie Peeler of Cullowhee; one sister, Bessie Green of Franklin; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Donald Roy Rubin, 59, of Webster, died Monday, March 20, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Ray Miller
Ray Miller, 77, of Sylva, died Saturday, March 18, 2006.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, at Liberty Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Lee officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
He was chairman of the Trustee Board at Liberty Baptist Church and sang in the senior choir. He was a son of the late Cleve Miller and Nora Howell.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter and two brothers.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Miller; two brothers, Melvin Miller of Nile, Ohio, and Purel Miller of Andrews; and three sisters, Pauline Jones of Andrews, and Irene Christian and Mary Lee Scott, both of Warren, Ohio.

Mildred Settlemyer
Mildred Franklin Settlemyer of East Sylva Circle, Sylva, died Sunday, March 19, 2006, at Mission Hospitals, Memorial Campus in Asheville.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, March 23) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Harry Vance officiating. The family will receive friends for two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Eddie West, Grey West, Mark West, Courtney Sizemore, Rocky Simmons and DeWayne Ward.
She was a native of Jackson County, where she had lived most of her life. Since 1987 she worked at the Golden Age Center, where she was employee of the year in 2005. She was a member of East Sylva Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Ira E. and Aldona Ashe Franklin.
She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Coy, Bill, Elmer, I.E. and Homer; and two sisters, Ora and Bertie.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda A. Sizemore of Sylva and Sherry L. West of Waynesville; and four grandchildren.

John Chapman
John Judson Chapman, 87, of Sylva, died Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at his home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at Sylva First Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. John Bunn and Robert Clegg officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 24, at Moody Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Ga.
A native of Valdosta, Ga., and a resident of Magnolia, Ark., from 1953-68, he had lived in Jackson County since 1968. He was a member of Sylva First Baptist Church, where he had served several terms as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1941 and master’s degree in 1948, both in geological engineering from Colorado School of Mines. He also earned a doctorate in geology from the University of Illinois in 1953. He worked as a topographic engineer for the U.S. Geological Survey from 1941-44, served in the U.S. Army in Europe from 1944-46, and worked for Creole Petroleum Corp. of Caracas, Venezuela, from 1948-50.
He taught geology at Southern State College from 1953-68, where he also served as department head and chairman of the Division of Natural Sciences. In 1968, he became the head of the Department of Earth Sciences at Western Carolina University, where he taught until his retirement in 1985. He was a fellow with the Geological Society of America, a Certified Professional Geologist, a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, served on the board of directors of the Foundation for the Improvement of Justice and was a member of the Georgia Salzburger Society. He was a son of the late James Davis Chapman and Stella Zipperer Chapman.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy E. Walker Chapman; one brother, James Davis Chapman III.
Surviving are two daughters, Martha Ann Chapman of Albemarle and Louisa Elaine Chapman of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, John Judson Chapman Jr. of Midland, Texas, and Davis Howard Chapman of Dallas, Texas; and seven grandchildren.
Manuel Morales
Manuel Martinez Morales, 29, of Fred Smith Road, Tuckasegee, died Friday, March 17, 2006, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Charles Crowe
Charles “Scar” Crowe, 80, of Cherokee’s Yellowhill community, died Monday, March 20, 2006, at his residence.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, in West Family Cemetery with the Rev. James “Red” Bradley officiating. Military graveside rites were conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Steve Youngdeer Post 143.
A lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was a retired custodian for the U.S. Government for 15 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served on the U.S.S. Louisville in World War II. He was a dedicated fan of Cherokee Central Schools, backing all of the sporting events, and was a foster parent who had raised more than 30 children. He was a son of the late John and Mary Bigwitch Crowe.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Louwanna Crowe; two brothers; seven sisters; and one daughter.
Surviving are two daughters, Joletta Crowe and Missy Crowe, both of Cherokee; five sons, Robert, Chuck and Danny Crowe, and Mose and Owen Walkingstick; 22 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
