Franklin softball team nips Smoky Mountain

Franklin scored two runs in the first inning and made them stand up for a 3-1 softball victory over Smoky Mountain on March 13 at Webster.

“It was a good game,” Coach Mark Taylor said. “It was 2-1 going into the seventh. If we can keep things close, we’re going to win some games. We’ve just got to get over the hump.”

Jill Barnett doubled for the Lady Panthers in the first and scored when Brandi Yokley reached on a fielder’s choice. Yokley came home on one of SM’s six errors.

The Lady Mustangs got on the board in the fifth when Mallory Nelson walked, Jessica Cabe singled and Cassie Randall had an RBI single.

Franklin added an insurance run in the seventh as Yokley doubled and Megan Fouts delivered an RBI single.

Cabe, who was two of four, was the only player for either team with more than one hit.

“Our bats still just didn’t connect enough,” Taylor said.

Nicole Carpenter pitched the first four innings for the win. Fouts went the last three for the save.

SM’s Megan Taylor pitched a complete game. She allowed five hits and walked no one while striking out six.

“I think that was her first game where she went the distance and kept the ball down,” Coach Taylor said. “She showed all her pitches. If she pitches like that, we’re going to be in games.”
