Franklin rallies in seventh to top SM

Franklin scored four runs after two were out in the seventh inning as the Panthers rallied for a 6-5 baseball win on March 13 at the SM field.

Matt Hawkins (0-1) was cruising along with a 5-2 lead and one out away from a complete game victory when the Panthers began their uprising. Matt Sullivan walked, and Casey Schulte homered cutting the gap to 5-4. After a walk to Josh Stewart, Casey Burnette doubled in the tying run. Brian Stanfield greeted reliever Grant Schallock with an RBI single to plate the winning run.

“It was a disappointing loss for everybody,” Coach Ron Yount said. “We were fortunate to have been in the position we were because we did not hit the ball. I think the kids will bounce back from this.”

The Mustangs (2-2) went up 2-0 in the second as Schallock singled and Daniel Buchanan homered.

The Panthers tied it 2-2 in the third. Chris Lequire led off with a home run, and another run scored on an error.

SM took a 5-2 lead by scoring three runs in the fourth without a hit. Chris Roberts walked with the bases loaded, and D.J. Brooks delivered a sacrifice fly. Another run scored on a wild pitch.

Lequire, who was two of four, was the only player for either team with more than one hit.

Christian Vose, who relived in the fourth, was the winning pitcher.

Hawkins gave up seven hits and walked six. He struck out 12.

“Matt pitched a fantastic game to wind up taking the loss,” Yount said.

The Mustang JVs are 1-3 after a 10-4 loss at Franklin. The Panthers took advantage of five errors to score eight runs in the fifth inning.

“We hit the ball well, but we left too many men on base,” Coach Scott Manshack said.

Andy Potter and Adam Henson were cited for their hitting.

Jared Jones pitched well before the errors hurt him in the fifth, according to Manshack. Sammy Matthews finished on the mound.
