Franklin rallies for soccer win over SM
Miranda Franks scored a pair of goals in the second half Friday as Franklin rallied for a 2-1 non-conference soccer victory over Smoky Mountain at the Panther Pit.
She tied the game in the 45th minute then won it in the 60th minute.
“She went shoulder-to-shoulder with one of our defenders against our onrushing goalkeeper, but still managed to slip the ball into the net,” Coach Stephaen Delor said of the winning goal.
“The Lady Mustangs tried to come back but were unable to threaten the Franklin goalkeeper late in the second half,” he added.
This was SM’s second loss to the Lady Panthers this season.
“It was a bit frustrating for all of us,” Delor said. We played them better this time but were unable to finish our scoring chances. We gave a good effort but were outskilled in a few areas.”
The Lady Mustangs (1-5) took a 1-0 lead on Jordan Youmans’ goal in the 20th minute. The play started with a corner kick that eventually hit the post.
“Courtney Spaulding passed the ball back to Jordan who blasted it into the goal from 6 yards away,” Delor said.
Malissa Gispert played in goal for SM in place of Amy Haggard, who was ill.
“Amy pulled herself out of the contest minutes before the kickoff,” Delor said. “She had been sick all day and couldn’t play. Malissa reacted well to handling her new duties and kept her team in the contest all night.”
Franklin had a 13-12 edge in shots. Gispert recorded 11 saves, and Whitney Harrell made eight for the Lady Panthers.
Chelsea Parham and Jenna Carpenter were singled out for their play.
The Lady Mustang JVs fell to 1-2 with a 2-1 loss.
Shandi Young played goalkeeper for the first time ever and performed well, according to Delor, who noted she stopped a penalty kick.
