Erwin holds off SM for victory in softball
Erwin turned back Smoky Mountain 5-3 in softball action March 15 at Webster.
“It was an exciting game,” Coach Mark Taylor said. “We struck out too many times and didn’t put the ball in play.”
The Lady Warriors pulled into a 2-2 tie in the fourth as Kristin Cogdill doubled, Jessica Gossett singled and Brooke Robinson had a two-run single.
They took a 4-2 lead in the fifth on Tiffany Brown’s RBI double and an error.
The Lady Mustangs (3-4) cut the gap to 4-3 in the sixth as Cassie Randall walked and came around on Megan Taylor’s double.
Brown singled to start the Erwin seventh, advanced on a wild pitch and a stolen base and scored on an error making it 5-3.
SM scored the game’s first run in the opening inning when Brittany Gilbert singled, moved up on Jessica Cabe’s sacrifice and scored on Randall’s single.
The Lady Mustangs made it 2-0 in the third as Gilbert walked, advanced on Cabe’s sacrifice and came home on Taylor’s double.
“We just couldn’t score a run or two when we needed it at the end,” the coach said.
Brown had two hits in four at-bats for the Lady Warriors.
Robinson was the winning pitcher. She yielded six hits and two walks while striking out 10.
Taylor and Gilbert were both two of three for SM.
“Megan hit two shots,” Coach Taylor said. “When Brittany gets on base, good things happen. She got on three times and scored twice.”
Taylor pitched for the Lady Mustangs. She surrendered six hits and no walks with nine strikeouts.
