Blue Ridge wins over Hiwassee, Highlands
Blue Ridge took a major step toward capturing a third straight league baseball title by pounding Little Smoky Mountain Conference rivals Hiwassee Dam 10-0 and Highlands 15-4 at home last week.
The Bobcats used a two-hit, 10-strikeout performance by Cody Goodwin along with a 15-hit offensive attack, which included a pair of two-run homers by Brandon Magruder, in the win over Hiwassee Dam on March 14.
The Bobcats got on the board in the second when Eric Farmer singled, stole second and scored on Cody Williams’ base hit. Later in the inning, Kalin Haskett walked ahead of Magruder˙?s homer making it 3-0.
Magruder, who was three of three with five RBIs, homered in the fifth following an RBI single by Haskett.
Williams was four of four. Michael Bradley went three of four while Nick Miles was two of four, including a double.
“Our guys continue to hit well while our pitching remains solid,” Coach Jim Nichols said. “We turned two nice double plays, and that element of the game is improving for us also.”
Goodwin (2-1) pitched five innings with Magruder pitching the sixth. The game was called after six due to the 10-run rule.
Blake Roberts took the loss.
The Bobcats (5-2. 2-0) continued their torrid hitting Friday by pounding out 11 hits, including four for extra bases, in the win over Highlands.
Magruder (1-0) went four innings for the win. He allowed four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. Dylan Brooks pitched the fifth in a game called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
The Highlanders went up 2-0 in the top of the first but Blue Ridge answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame. The big hit was a two-run triple by Miles, who was two of three with five RBIs.
The Bobcats played errorless ball while Highlands committed six miscues.
