Wilmington takes two from Western Carolina

UNC-Wilmington defeated Western Carolina twice in non-conference baseball action last week at UNC-W’s Brooks Field.

A two-run homer by Justin Barefoot in the fourth inning proved to be enough for the Seahawks to take a 3-2 victory on March 7.

The Catamounts scored in the first on Jonathan Greene’s RBI single.

UNC-W tied it in the third on an RBI single by Chris Hatcher.

Barefoot’s homer gave his team a 3-1 edge in the fourth.

WCU cut the gap to 3-2 in the seventh on Donnie Wilson’s RBI single.

Brett Braxton pitched 6.1 innings for the win. He allowed four hits, two runs and a walk with six strikeouts. Allen Flood picked up the save with 2.2 hitless innings.

Brandon McDowell (0-1) took the loss.

Chris Hatcher led the Seahawk offense by going three of three while Steve Halford was two of three.

Barefoot’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning was the difference in UNC-W’s 5-4 win March 8.

Western took a 2-0 lead in the first on Barrett Shaft’s RBI triple and Trey McDaniel’s run-scoring single.

Wilmington tied it in the third on Hatcher’s two-run homer.

The Seahawks went up 4-2 in the sixth on Jonathan Batts’ RBI single and Barefoot’s run-scoring double.

Grey Gregory and Shaft had RBI singles in the seventh for a 4-4 tie.

Adam Paul pitched the final 2.1 innings for the win.

WCU reliever Greg Holland (0-2) took the loss.

Batts had two hits for the Seahawks.

Gregory, Shaft and McDaniel all had two hits for the Cats.
