This view of Main Street (top photo) dates back to July 1971 and shows sidewalk construction in front of businesses on the east end of downtown Sylva. From left are Campbell Electric Co., owned by Claude Campbell, which moved to Schulman Street in 1975 (where Mountain Projects is now) and closed in 1991; David Parker’s Blue Ribbon Shoe Store; Thrift-tee Discount; Home Credit; Sossamon Furniture, owned by Boyd Sossamon, which moved a few doors west (current Used Bookstore location) around 1990 and then to Mill Street before closing around 1998; and Western Auto, which was owned by Ed Wilson in 1971, purchased by Walter Wilson around 1985 and closed in 1989. Businesses in those buildings now (lower photo) include, from left, Livingston’s Photo (Campbell’s and the next building); Annie’s Bakery (Thrift-tee Discount), Sylva Barber Shop (Home Credit); Simply Elegant and Main Design (Sossamon’s); Arsenal Artifacts and Dodie’s Auction (Western Auto). David Schulman’s clothing store, David’s, which was located in the the two Livingston’s Photo buildings from the mid-1970s through about 1990. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
