Steinel hits two homers as Tuscola pounds SM
Tuscola scored six runs in the first inning Friday and breezed to a 13-3 non-conference softball win over Smoky Mountain at Webster.
The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
“We just didn’t play well offensively or defensively,” Coach Mark Taylor said. “We’re not quitting. We’re still trying to do the right thing.”
The Lady Mountaineers pounded out 12 hits. The big gun was Ashley Steinel, who was three of three with a pair of home runs and a double.
Jennifer Pitts, Morgan Mills, Casey Stamey and Tara Gibbs all had two hits for Tuscola.
Pitts pitched the first four innings for the win.
Brittany Gilbert and Megan Taylor were both two of three for the Lady Mustangs (2-2).
Pitts and Steinel both doubled while Mills and Stamey each had singles helping Tuscola score the six runs in the first.
Steinel’s homer made it 7-0 in the second, and she added a two-run shot in the fourth. Mills and Gibbs both doubled in the fourth leading to two more runs and an 11-0 advantage.
Three errors resulted in two more runs in the fifth making it 13-0.
SM scored its three runs in the fifth. Gilbert and Taylor both had singles in the frame.
Rachel Stewman pitched the entire game for the Lady Mustangs.
