Soccer team remains winless and scoreless

Smoky Mountain’s soccer team fell to 0-3 with all of the losses by shutouts after Franklin took a 2-0 win on March 8 at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

Coach Stephaen Delor said he feels his team’s offense will come around despite the early struggles.

“We have very young forwards who were playing in middle school last year,” he said. “We have to work on our finishing. We’re making progress every day in practice.”

The Lady Panthers broke a scoreless tie on Rose Mickler’s goal at the 64-minute mark. Mickler took a pass through the middle and attempted a shot which was saved by Amy Haggard, but Mickler put the rebound in.

“Amy made a great save, but the ball deflected right back to Mickler,” Delor said.

Franklin added a goal on a breakaway with two minutes left. Delor said some of his players stopped because they thought the Lady Panthers were going to be called for offsides.

“The girls were disappointed because they know they could have played better and pulled the upset,” Delor said.

Franklin had a 15-8 advantage in shots. Haggard made seven saves.

“We are still trying to get players at different positions in preparation for our conference opener (March 22) against Brevard,” the coach said.

The Lady Mustang JVs fell to 1-1 with a 2-1 loss. Abi Jones scored the lone goal.
