SM women win meet; men come in second
Smoky Mountain’s women came out on top in an extremely close finish in the season’s first track meet last Thursday at Pisgah.
The Lady Mustangs had 48 points to Mitchell’s 47 and Pisgah’s 46.
Leading the way were Victoria Palmer and Chelsea Schultz, who both won two events.
Pisgah’s men came out on top with 77 points followed by SM (56) and Mitchell (37).
Travis Brotherton won two events for the Mustangs.
Schultz won the long jump with a distance of 12-0 and the triple jump at 26-1.25. She was second in the high jump with a leap of 4-0.
Palmer was the winner of the 400 meters (1:06) and the 800 meters (2:37).
Ali Taylor finished second in the 100 meters (14.93) and the 200 meters (32.34).
Cayla Cucumber placed second in the shot put with a throw of 25-0.
The 200-meter relay team of Nicole Benavides, Carenda Franklin, Amanda Barnes and Laura Hambrick was second in 1:07.
Placing third were Amanda Smith in the 200 (33.76), Barnes in the 400 (1:25.31), Hambrick in the 300 hurdles (59.6) and Taryn Wilson in the discus (53-0).
“We had several freshmen, and getting them oriented into a track meet was a challenge,” Coach Dale Galloway said. “I was very proud of the entire team, and we’re ready to build from here.”
He singled out Barnes, who ran in back-to-back events.
“That helped us make the difference in what we did,” Galloway said.
On the men’s side, Brotherton was the top performer. He took the 1,600 in 4:59 and the 800 in 2:08.
Cory Siler took the 100 in 11:87.
Field event winners were C.J. Fortner in the high jump (5-10) and T.J. Bradley in the discus (96-1).
A pair of Mustang relay teams came out on top. They were the 800 squad of Darrell Buchanan, Tyler Clarke, George Neslen and Bradley (1:42) and the 400 unit of Bradley, Neslen, Travis Hollomon and Siler (3:50).
Placing second were Clarke in the 300 hurdles (48.1) and Rodney McCormick in the high jump (5-6).
Relay teams coming in second were the 3,200 squad of Jack Cooper, Greg Gibson, Adam Ray and Brotherton (9:50) and the 1,600 team of Siler, Neslen, Cooper and Clarke (3:50).
Dayne Bowers was third in the triple jump (34-3.5) and fourth in the long jump (17-4). McKinley Davis was third in the shot put (36-0).
Hollomon was fourth in the 100 (12.44) and the 200 (26.25). Jesse Brooks was fourth in the discus (92-7).
“I was real pleased with our first meet of the year,” Coach Jamie Extine said. “They ran very hard and were very competitive.”
SM will not compete in a meet scheduled for today (Thursday) at Pisgah.
