Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Marie Coward

Marie Brown Coward, 87, of Brevard, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at her residence.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 9, in the chapel of Moody-Connolly Funeral Home with the Revs. Don Johnson, Burt Dodson and Don Littlejohn officiating. Burial was in Upper Coward Cemetery.

She was a native of Jackson County and was a daughter of the late Alfred and Varina Wood Brown.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, James T. “Buck” Coward; two daughters, Adele Coward and Opal Bryson; and one son, Brownlow Coward.

Surviving are five sons, W.A. Brown and Anthony Coward, both of Rosman, Hubert Brown and Kay Brown, both of Brevard, and Arville Brown of West Palm Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Juanita McCall of Cashiers, and Elouise Hale and Bronith Shook, both of Brevard; one sister, Mamie Queen of Cary; and several grandchildren.



David Mason

David Alan Mason, 46, of Candler, died unexpectedly Friday, March 10, 2006, at his residence.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, March 16) at Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Avery Brown and Corey Boone officiating. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Parris Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, he was a printer who lived in Buncombe County for 15 years. He was a son of Billy Wood and the late Margaret Mason Wood.

In addition to his mother, he was also preceded in death by one brother, Richard “Richie” Wood.

Surviving in addition to his father are three daughters, Jennifer Mason of Boston, Mass., Jessica Mason of Morehead City and Emily Torrans of Sylva; and one brother, Gary Wood of Dillsboro.

Memorials may be made to the local Alcoholics Anonymous group.



Verco Hyatt

William Verco Hyatt, 88, of Franklin, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 9, at Zion Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Steve Webb and Mike Fox officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Glenn Watson, Bill Stanfield, David Bryant, Danny Rogers, Doug Johnson, Jim Shook, Bruce Holland and Harold Ray Hyatt.

A native of Jackson County, he was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church and was a retired U.S. Postal Service mail carrier. He was a son of the late Frank and Laura Wilson Hyatt.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Edith Hyatt, who died in 1981; three brothers, Perry, Leon and Leo; and two sisters, Lucy Rogers and Marie Mashburn.

Surviving are two daughters, Frankie Bowers and Freda Watson, both of Franklin; one son, William Ray Hyatt of Asheville; one brother, Eddie Hyatt of Marysville, Wash.; five sisters, Villie Johnson of Sylva, Ruby Sloan of Ringgold, Va., and Myrtle Crawford, Evelyn Brendle and Maxine Sanders, all of Franklin; and five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Clyde Phillips

Clyde Allen Phillips, 62, of Franklin, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 12, at Wells Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Terry Dixon and Jonathon Wolf officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Paul Phillips, John Phillips, Ronnie Hedden, Randy Hedden, Joe Phillips, Jesse Phillips, Tim Snell Jr. and John Cabe.

He was a native of Macon County and a truck driver. He was a member of Wells Grove Baptist Church, where he was involved in Sunday school and training union. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, and a member of the National Rifle Association and the Owner-Operators Independent Drivers Association. He was a son of the late Wendell Phillips and Harriett Elizabeth Strain Phillips.

Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Linda McMahan Phillips; two daughters, Nikkie Burkhalter of Pittsboro and Retha Phillips of Sylva; two sons, Ronnie Hedden and Randy Hedden, both of Sylva; one sister, Betty Snell of Colfax, Ind.; three brothers, Carl Phillips of Port Isabell, Texas, John Phillips of Milton, Fla., and Paul Phillips of Hollywood, Md.; and seven grandchildren.

Bryant Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Roland Shimel

031606rolieRoland Clement “Rolie” Shimel, 82, of Missouri City, Texas, formerly of Sylva, died Thursday, March 9, 2006, at his home after a battle with Parkinson’s disease.

He was born June 21, 1923, in Minneapolis, Minn. He was awarded the Purple Heart while serving as a radio operator in the 319th Engineering Combat Battalion during World War II. He earned his degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Minnesota and for 35 years worked with Honeywell in Minneapolis and Clearwater, Fla. He enjoyed working with his hands, attending church, literature and music. He retired to Sylva and lived here for 15 years before moving to Texas.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith; and one son, Mark.

Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Dottie; one sister, Merilyn Shimel Hall of Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; two sons, Gary of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Paul of Pensacola, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Stephanie Hoogerwerf of Houston, Texas; two stepsons, Tom Friesen of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Larry of Thomasville, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Frank Buchanan

Frank Henry Buchanan, 91, of Webster, died unexpectedly Friday, March 10, 2006, after a brief illness.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 13, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Ray McCall and David Powell officiating. Burial was in Webster Cemetery.

He was born at home on Buchanan Loop on June 16, 1914. He grew up working on the family farm and graduated from Webster High School in 1932. After two semesters at Western Carolina College, he moved to Washington, D.C., for a job. In 1941, he was drafted by the U.S. Army and served in World War II. After the war, he moved to Alexandria, Va., and retired in 1971 as an archivist from General Services Administration. Following retirement he returned to Webster. He enjoyed sharing stories about growing up on “The Loop.” He was an Atlanta Braves fan, a member of Webster Baptist Church and served on the Webster Cemetery Committee. He was a son of the late William Tyler and Vilanta Blanton Buchanan.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen McGinnis Buchanan; four sisters, Manilla Buchanan, Bertha Worley, Louise McElhinney and Roxie Russell; and two brothers, Roy and Delos Buchanan.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda Lee Buchanan of Webster; two sisters, Mildred Haskett of Sylva and Hilda McGinnis of Alexandria; one brother, Jerry Buchanan of Farnham, Va.; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.

Mary Green

Mary Johnson Green, 79, of Big Cove Road, Cherokee, died Friday, March 10, 2006, at her sister’s home after a period of declining health.

Services will be held in Kentucky.

A native of Pikeville, Ky., she lived in Deland, Fla., six months of every year and in Cherokee the other six months. She was a graduate of Pikeville High School and attended Eastern Kentucky University. She retired from sales at Sara and Donnaball, and was a member of Plymouth Avenue Christian Church and Eastern Stars. She was a daughter of the late Jack and Opal Compton Johnson.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Haywood Green.

Surviving are two sons, Tom Green of Orlando, Fla., and Larry Green of Apoka, Fla.; one brother, Harry T. “Chuck” Johnson of Harrodsbury, Ky.; and one sister, Elva J. Adkins of Deland.

Bobby Dishman

Bobby Houston Dishman, 77, of Macktown Gap Road, Sylva, died Monday, March 13, 2006, at Britthaven of Franklin after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 17, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Burrell officiating. Entombment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens, Veterans’ Section, in Hampton, Va., with military rites conducted by the U.S. Navy.

He was a native of Jackson County and had lived here since 1988 after living away for a time. He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a son of the late James and Nellie Cabe Dishman.

Surviving is his wife of 32 years, Ruby Price Dishman.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 925, Sylva, NC 28779; or the American Lung Association.



Philip Lietch

031606vercohyattPhilip Preston Lietch, 49, of Buff Creek Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Friday, March 9, 2006.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Morris officiating. Burial was in Addie Cemetery.

A native of Miami, Fla., he had lived in Jackson County for the last several years. He was a truck driver. He was a son of Thomas and Margeuerite Alice Carskadon Lietch.

Surviving in addition to his parents are one daughter, Lindsey Ellen Lietch of the home; one son, Philip Preston Lietch II of the home; and two brothers, Robert Maxwell Lietch and Thomas Nelson Lietch.



Ellith McFalls

031606ltmcfallsLt. Ellith K. McFalls, 44, of Sylva, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at Mission Hospitals, Memorial Campus in Asheville.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 12, in Myers Auditorium at Southwestern Community College with the Revs. Dr. Jack Robinson and Jeff Powell officiating. Burial was in Love Cemetery with rites conducted by members of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Pallbearers were members of the Sheriff’s Emergency Tactical Team, including Donnie Allen, Chip Beegle, Vince Brestle, Scott Buttery, Jim Clawson, Charles Crisp, Matt Helton, Scottie Holder, Johnny Hollifield, Al Kincaid, Patrick McCoy and Kenneth Woodring.

Honorary pallbearers were the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, Jackson County fire departments, Jackson County rescue squads, N.C. Highway Patrol, N.C. Magistrates, N.C. Probation and Parole, N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, Sylva Police Department and Western Carolina University Police Department.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he worked for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for the last 17 years. He was on the Sheriff’s Emergency Tactical Team, was a member of Fall Cliff Baptist Church and attended Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. He was a 1980 graduate of Cullowhee High School and received his degree in criminal justice from Southwestern Community College. He enjoyed woodworking and playing the guitar. He was a son of the late George and Marie Coggins McFalls.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Bradley McFalls, who died in 2000; and one brother, Elden McFalls.

Surviving are his wife of two years, Melissa Mathis McFalls; one daughter, Jessica McFalls Henson of Cullowhee; one stepdaughter, Chastity Williams of the home; three sisters, Ellen Mathews and Aileen Moss, both of Cullowhee, and Evelyn Mathis of Sylva; and two brothers, George E. McFalls of Bryson City and Joe McFalls of Cullowhee.

Memorials may be made to the Lt. Ellith K. McFalls Basic Law Enforcement Training Scholarship Fund, 447 College Dr., Sylva, NC 28779.
