Former students arrested after break-in at ‘Hub’
By Lynn Hotaling
Three former students have been arrested after a weekend robbery at the Jackson County School of Alternatives.
Commonly called “The Hub,” the alternative school is located in the old Scotts Creek School.
Detective Shannon Ashe of the Sylva Police Department received a tip Saturday morning (March 11) around 9 a.m. that a break-in had occurred at the school, according to Capt. Steve Lillard of the Sheriff’s Office. Ashe then notified the Sheriff’s Office and officers were dispatched to the scene, Lillard said.
When deputies arrived at the school, they discovered that a break-in had occurred and that some property had been stolen, Lillard said.
Investigating officers were able to identify three suspects, and all three were arrested around 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Lillard said.
The arrests came quickly because the initial caller provided a lead to the suspects’ identity, Lillard said, and in the course of their investigation, the officers were able to link those people to the crime.
The suspects entered the school by breaking the glass in a rear door and caused some damage to the school during the course of the robbery, Lillard said.
Items stolen included three computers, a hand-held radio and various other electronic equipment, and a hand-made guitar, Lillard said.
Arrested were:
– Cory Clyde Case, 17, of Sylva. Case remains jailed in lieu of a $15,000 bond and faces charges of larceny; maintaining a place for use of a controlled substance; possession of methamphetamine; possession of stolen property; and breaking and entering.
– Tristian Wade Brinkman, 19, of Sylva. Brinkman remains jailed in lieu of a $30,000 bond and faces charges of larceny; possession of marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia; possession of stolen property; possession of meth; and breaking and entering. There was also an outstanding warrant on Brinkman for failure to appear in court, Lillard said.
– Calvin Dean Davis, 19, of Tuckasegee. Davis, who was released on an $8,000 bond, faces charges of breaking and entering; larceny; and possession of stolen goods.
Officers involved in the investigation included Deputy J.P. Gallardo, school resource officer Avery Brown, Detectives Patrick McCoy and Andi Clayton, and Lt. Jimmy Clawson.
