Enka blanks Lady Mustang soccer team

Enka blanked Smoky Mountain 3-0 in a non-conference soccer game at Enka on March 6.

Amy Johnson scored twice for the Sugar Jets while Ana Jimenez had a goal and an assist.

“There’s not much to say about this game except that we held the Sugar Jets to 12 shots and frustrated a team that expected to clobber us,” Coach Stephaen Delor said. “Our team could not connect with our forwards, and we were limited to five shots. We panicked sometimes when we had possession.”

Enka was up 1-0 at halftime after Johnson’s goal.

The Sugar Jets made it 2-0 when Jimenez scored from 15 yards out in the 65th minute.

Just a minute later Jimenez crossed the ball into the box, and Johnson put it home from 5 yards out.

SM’s Amy Haggard recorded 12 saves, some of which were remarkable, according to Delor. He noted it was her first game of the season after finishing the state basketball playoffs two days earlier.

“We did not fight for the 50-50s in the first half and gave Enka some opportunities they should not have had,” the coach said. “The team came out fired up in the second half and played much better, but sometimes when we had the ball we rushed things.”

The Sugar Jets committed 12 fouls while the Lady Mustangs had just two.
