Dillsboro leaders approve committee appointments

By Justin Goble

Dillsboro officials approved the town’s committee appointments during their March regular meeting.

Town board members voted 4-0 to approve the committees. Jim Dukes was absent from the meeting.

These appointments included:

– Streets, Sidewalks and Sanitation: Jimmy Cabe, chairman; Wade Wilson and John Faulk.

– Parks and Recreation: Bud Smith, chairman; Ray Nations and Leslie Rojohn.

– Monteith House: Susan Leveille, Peggy Mason and Emma Wertenberger.

– Monteith Park: T.J. Walker, John Clark, Karen Barnes and Brant Barnes.

Financial Officers: Mike Fitzgerald and Herb Nolan.

– Zoning and Signs: Mike Fitzgerald, chairman; Teresa Dowd and Andy Smith.

– Planning Board: Teresa Dowd, John Miele, Mona Gersky, David Gates, David Jones and Jim Cochran.

– Council of Citizens and Merchants: Bruford Riddle, Susan Owen, Jim Hartbarger, Mark Simpson, Shirley Simpson, Shirley Coleman and C.B. Hart.

– Historic Commission: Mary Nolan, chairman; Dawn Hummel and Judy Moody.

– Solid Waste: Herb Nolan.

– Economic Development Commission: Jean Hartbarger.

– Jackson County Greenway Committee: Diane Cochran and Jay Steeves.

Though the board green-lighted the committees “as is” on March 6, members said they were still looking for volunteers in the town who were willing to serve and that committee membership is open to change.

“This is by no means the end of it,” said Mayor Jean Hartbarger. “We’re going to be adding more and more names.”

In other business March 6:

– Town board members approved a commercial appraisal of the Monteith house and property.

Hartbarger said the appraisal was needed to help secure grant funds for the property. The appraisal is expected to cost between $2,000 and $3,000.

– Officials approved the county’s land-use plan.

The plan, which includes demographic, economic and geographic data and shows where the population is growing and is expected to grow, was initially set to be voted on at a multi-jurisdictional meeting held Feb. 13.

Commissioners’ Chairman Brian McMahan requested the municipalities decide on it individually since some officials were absent from that meeting.

– Hartbarger announced that Dillsboro has been put on the list of nominees to be added to the National Register of Historic Places.

If approved, Hartbarger said being added to the register would help the town get more grant money to fund preservation projects.

– A budget planning meeting has been set for March 28.

Board members will discuss plans for the 2006-07 fiscal year. The meeting will start after a workshop meeting with officials from the Rural Center, which will begin at 9 a.m.
