Buchanan powers SM to victory over Swain

Levi Buchanan pitched a three-hitter and also was a force at the plate as Smoky Mountain downed Swain 9-0 in a non-conference baseball game March 6 at the SM field.

Buchanan (2-1) struck out seven and walked two while going the distance on the mound.

He had a double and home run in three at-bats.

The Mustangs (2-1) pounded out 13 hits, including a three of three performance by Jared Deitz, who had three RBIs.

Daniel Buchanan was three of four while Coleman Corzine and Grant Schallock both went two of four.

“It was an excellent win for us,” Coach Ron Yount said. “Levi did a good job on the mound. We played super defense, and we hit the ball real well.”

Singles by Schallock, Daniel Buchanan and Jeremy Wood loaded the bases in the second. Deitz drove in two with a single, and Levi Buchanan had an RBI double. Corzine added an RBI single, and another run scored on an error for a 5-0 lead.

Daniel Buchanan tripled and scored on a Deitz single for a 6-0 advantage in the third.

Levi Buchanan homered to start the SM fourth. Base hits by Corzine, Schallock and Daniel Buchanan produced another run for an 8-0 lead.

Jared Deitz singled to open the fifth and later scored on the front end of a double steal with D.J. Brooks at first.

“The guys could have been down after a tough loss Friday, but they came out and pounded the ball,” Yount said.

Swain starter Brad Roland took the loss.

The Mustang JVs fell to 1-2 with losses at Swain and Tuscola last week.

“We hit the ball pretty good, but our fielding has to get better,” Coach Scott Manshack said.

SM committed seven errors and gave up eight walks in an 11-7 loss at Swain on March 6. The Mustangs committed 14 errors in a 16-4 loss last Thursday at Tuscola.

Sammy Matthews pitched well against Tuscola, and Adam Henson had a good relief outing against Swain, according to Manshack.

The varsity was slated to play Tuscola on Friday, but the game was cancelled due to a scheduling conflict. It probably will not be made up.
