Eugenia Mobley
Eugenia Kay Gildard Mobley, 59, of Laser Drive, Sylva, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at her residence after an extended illness. Private services will be held at a later date. She was born in Clearwater, Fla., and had lived in Jackson County for the last two years. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was a daughter of the late Harry Leroy and Pearlie Mae Gildard. Surviving are two daughters, Sonya Lynne Charnetzky of Grifton and Tiffany Lynne Mobley of the home; four sisters, Virginia Carol Moynihan of Sylva, Sandra Sue Clay of Savannah, Ga., and Donna Louise Smith and Judith Anne Walker, both of Bakersville, Calif.; one brother, Stuart Owen of Dunedin, Fla.; and two grandchildren. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Cline Roane
Cline Roane, 84, of Franklin, died Saturday, March 4, 2006, at a local nursing center. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 8, in Woodlawn Cemetery in Franklin with the Rev. John L. Raby officiating. A native of Macon County, he was a logger, truck driver and construction worker. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II, and a member of Maiden Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a son of the late Ellis B. and Myrda Nicholson Roane. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Furman Roane; one daughter, Janelle Johnson; and one infant son, Tony Roane. Surviving are one son, Eddie Roane of California; four daughters, Martha Jones and Dana Trammell, both of Sylva, Debbie Rushing of Midway, Tenn., and Kim Hyatt of Waynesville; and five grandchildren. Delores Davis
Delores Browning Davis, 62, of Cherokee’s Yellowhill community, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at her home following a long battle with a terminal illness. Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at Cherokee High School with the Rev. Ed Kilgore and Ray Kinsland officiating. Burial was in Yellowhill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dennis “Fuzz” Sneed, Eddie Smith, Glen Bradley, Chuck Rochester, Scott Rochester, Greg Fortner, B. Ensley and Mike Parker. She was born Nov. 13, 1943, in the old Cherokee Indian Hospital, and attended Swain County High School and Southwestern Community College. She was employed by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians until she became ill. She represented Yellowhill community on the Tribal Council and served on numerous committees that work to advance the lifestyle and education of youth on the Reservation. She worked at Granny’s Kitchen for many years. She was the daughter of the late Roy and Sallie Littlejohn Browning. She was also preceded in death by two husbands, Jim Rochester and Pete Davis. Surviving are three sons, Denny Rochester of Cherokee, Jeff Rochester of Atlanta, Ga., and Jody Davis of Las Vegas, Nev.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Alex Calhoun
Alex Calhoun, 54, of Cherokee’s Big Cove community, died Friday, March 3, 2006, at Tsali Care Center. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 5, at the family cemetery with the Rev. James “Bo” Parris officiating. A native of Swain County, he was a son of the late Lawrence and Margaret Littlejohn Calhoun. Surviving is one brother, Tammer Calhoun of Virginia. Earl Bradley
Earl Walter Bradley, 70, of Salem, S.C., formerly of Wilmot, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, at Oconee Memorial Hospital. Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 3, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Frankie Porter officiating. Burial was in Wilmot Community Cemetery. A native of Jackson County, he was retired from Duke Power. He was a son of the late Walter Sley and Margaret Messer Bradley. He was also preceded in death by one son, Wally Bradley; and two brothers, Vincent and Glenn Bradley. Surviving are his wife, Fay Ellen Brown Bradley; one son, Mike Bradley of Salem; one daughter, Sherry Hopkins of Tamassee, S.C.; two brothers, Gerald and Joe Bradley, both of Whittier; five sisters, Thelma Buchanan of Sylva, Frankie Purvis and Belva Ham, both of Whittier, Nancy Bell of Cherokee, and Peggy Jachowski of Bartow, Fla.; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Faye Owens
Faye A. Owens, 65, of Whittier’s Shoal Creek community, died Thursday, March 2, 2006, in a local hospital. Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 5, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. A native of Franklin County, Ga., she had lived in Whittier for the past five years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Owens and a daughter, Mary Owens. Surviving are four sons, Bobby Brown and Tim Brown, both of Whittier, Anthony Brown of Black Mountain, and James Owens of Longview, Texas; two daughters, Teresa Poling of Whittier and Kim Owens of Detroit; and 10 grandchildren.
James Mallough
James Mallough, 85, of Whittier, died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at his residence. No services are planned. He was a native of Philadelphia, Penn., and recently moved from New Port Richey, Fla., to Qualla community. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired United States Postal Service mail carrier. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Michael Wahnetah
Michael Austin Wahnetah, 21, of Cherokee’s Rough Branch community, died Saturday, March 4, 2006, at his residence. Services will be held at a later date at Yellowhill Baptist Church with the Rev. James “Bo” Parris officiating. He attended a prep school in Georgia and Cherokee High School. He was a member of Yellowhill Judo Club and had earned a black belt, and enjoyed being outdoors. He was a son of Russell Lee Wahnetah and Maria Armachain of Cherokee. Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers, Robert Lee Wahnetah and Samuel Wahnetah, both of Cherokee; three sisters, Carla Wahnetah, Lois Wahnetah and Ondrea Armachain, all of Cherokee; and his grandparents, Mary Katherine Lossie, Lois Pensavalle, and Robert and Frances Wahnetah, all of Cherokee. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Bob Crawford
Robert Carr “Bob” Crawford, 75, of Bryson City, died Monday, March 6, 2006. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, March 9) at Bryson City United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the church’s fellowship hall following the service. He was a native and resident of Bryson City, and was a local business owner. He served 21 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a chief petty officer after service in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was an active member of Bryson City Untied Methodist Church and served as chairman of the trustees. He enjoyed volunteer work. He was a son of the late Charlie Raymond Crawford and Ruby Helen Carr. Surviving are his wife, Lynda Martin Crawford; one daughter, Jamie L. Crawford; one son, Robert E. Crawford; one stepson, Tony Sarti; one stepdaughter, Kim Cunningham; and 12 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bryson City United Methodist Church building fund. Manuel Buchanan
Emanuel Arthur “Manuel” Buchanan, 65, of Sylva, died Monday, March 6, 2006. Services were held Wednesday, March 8, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Revs. Robert Blanton and Dr. John Bunn officiating. He was a self-employed plumber for more than 30 years and enjoyed being outdoors. He was a son of the late Memphis Buchanan and Mary Cowan. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Clinton, Guy, Oscar and Herman; and one sister, Joyce Boone. Surviving are his wife, Alva Lou Buchanan; two sons, Steven and Doug Buchanan, both of Sylva; two sisters, Anna Lou Wiggins of Gastonia and Bessie Stroud of Lexington; three brothers, Kenneth, Jessie and Carl Buchanan, all of Lexington; and two grandchildren. Nellie Rice
Nellie Louise Kinsey Rice, 79, of Cashiers, died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at Universal Health Care in Fletcher after a period of declining health. Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, at Cashiers Baptist Church with the Revs. Robert Driggers, Lewis Smith and Chris Norris officiating. Burial was in Upper Zachary Cemetery. A native of Transylvania County, she had lived in Jackson County for most of her life. She retired from Cashiers Plastics as a supervisor and was a member of Cashiers Baptist Church. She was the last surviving child of the late Jerry Verdell and Delphia Aikens Kinsey. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Rice, who died in October 2005; and one grandson. Surviving are two daughters, Janice Dillard of Cashiers and Sharon Garren of Mills River; four sons, Robert Leroy Rice of Flowery Branch, Ga., James Donnie Rice of Rosman, Bennie Odell Rice of Bull Pen and Billy Ray Rice of Cashiers; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
