Western women rout College of Charleston

Western Carolina’s women’s basketball team routed College of Charleston 98-65 in Southern Conference action on Feb. 20 at the Ramsey Center.

Monique Dawson scored 18 points for the Lady Cats. She was joined in double figures by Lauren Powell with 13, Ashley Pellom and Chevon Keith both with 11 and Jessika Johnson with 10.

Erika Smith and Jade Hughes scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Lady Cougars.

WCU scored 55 points in the second half while shooting 70.4 percent from the floor and turning the game into a rout.

Western led from start to finish and took control by scoring the last 14 points of the first half. Dawson had eight in that span, and Pellom added four making it 43-22.

Pellom’s layup capped a 12-1 spurt for a 65-39 margin with 11:23 on the clock.

The final represented the largest margin.

Following the hot second half, WCU finished shooting 57.8 percent from the floor while limiting Charleston to 39.1 percent.

Keith’s 11 rebounds helped the Lady Cats to a 40-34 advantage on the boards. Nikki Williams had eight for the Lady Cougars.

Charleston turned the ball over 21 times, and Western had 17.

Completing the WCU scoring were Teyawna Hardy and Amelia Miller with nine apiece, Teshymia Tillman and April Parker both with six and Kendra Eaton with five.
