Western Carolina wins over Spartans
Western Carolina took the lead for good early in the first half en route to a 67-53 Southern Conference win over UNC-Greensboro on Feb. 21 at the Ramsey Center.
Antonio Russell and Corey Muirhead scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, for the Catamounts in front of 1,478 fans. Kyle Greathouse added 13 points.
Kyle Hines scored 21 points for the Spartans, and Ricky Hickman had 16.
A three-pointer by Negus McKenna gave the Cats the lead for good, 7-4, with 17:11 to go in the first half. It was part of a 14-1 spurt that included three more treys – two by Greathouse and one by Russell – for a 16-5 margin with 13:40 on the clock.
The lead reached 21-8 on Jared Outing’s layup at the 11:51 mark.
Hickman scored five in a 9-2 run cutting the gap to 23-17 following Marc Campbell’s jumper with 8:04 on the clock.
WCU led 39-32 at intermission.
Hines’ layup brought his team within 41-36 with 18:36 remaining.
UNC-G managed just two points over the next seven minutes as the Cats took a 49-38 lead with 11:38 on the clock after four straight points from Outing.
Russell and Muirhead both had four in a 10-3 spurt for a 59-45 lead on David Berghoefer’s layup at the 6:59 mark.
WCU shot 47.1 percent from the field, and the Spartans made 42 percent of their attempts.
McKenna’s eight rebounds helped the Cats to a 35-26 advantage on the boards. Hines led UNC-G with seven.
The Spartans committed 15 turnovers, and Western had 13.
Completing the WCU scoring were Berghoefer with eight, McKenna with seven and Outing with six.
