WCU’s basketball teams prepare to open tourney

Western Carolina’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will take part in the Southern Conference Tournament, which starts today (Thursday) in Charleston, S.C.

All men’s games will be at the North Charleston Coliseum. The women will play the first round and quarterfinals at Citadel’s McAlister Field House before moving to the Coliseum for Saturday’s semifinals.

The Catamounts (13-16, 7-7) are seeded seventh and will meet UNC-Greensboro at 6 p.m. today (Thursday). The winner will play Elon at 6 p.m. Friday.

If the Cats advance, they would play in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The finals will be televised by ESPN2 at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Lady Cats (8-19, 6-10) are the fifth seed and will play Appalachian State at 11 a.m. Saturday. Subsequent games would be at 6 p.m. Saturday and 6 p.m. Sunday.
