Then, then and now
Sylva’s former train depot (top two photos), stood on Mill Street in the geographic center of Sylva’s original octagon-shaped town limits. The depot served passenger traffic for decades, from the 1890s until 1948. The top photo, loaned to us by Claude Jones, shows a crowd waiting at the depot in the early 1900s but after 1902 because the peak of the former Sylva Supply Co. (now Jackson’s General Store), built in that year is visible in the background. The middle photo, which is believed to be from about 1961, shows the depot as it looked after passenger service was discontinued. With the demolition of the depot during the late 1970s, the back of Sylva Supply building can be seen clearly from the train tracks. The concrete platform where the depot once stood is now used for parking; a surveyors’ mark indicating the exact center of town is still visible. – Photo courtesy Claude Jones (top), Herald file photo (middle), and Herald photo (bottom) by Nick Breedlove |
