Only one Republican to seek county elected office

Filing for political offices in Jackson County concluded at noon Tuesday, and only one Republican candidate signed up to seek a local post.
Barring write-ins, all county races will be decided with May’s Democrat primary, and all races except commissioners’ chairman, register of deeds and three non-partisan school board seats will be contested.
The race for District 2 commissioner has attracted the most candidates, with five filing for the seat.
Three sitting county commissioners – Roberta Crawford (District 1), Conrad Burrell (District 2) and Eddie Madden (District 4) chose not to seek re-election. In addition, one current school board member – Nathan Moss – chose to seek a commissioners’ seat instead.
The list of local candidates includes:
Sheriff – Incumbent Jimmy Ashe and Jim Cruzan.
Clerk of Court – Incumbent Ann Melton and Elaine Carter.
Register of Deeds – Incumbent Joe Hamilton
Chairman, county commissioners – Incumbent Brian McMahan.
Commissioner, District 1 – Carroll Buchanan, Raymond Bunn and William Shelton.
Commissioner, District 2 – Miguel Baerga, Ben Clawson, Bob Ginn, Tom Massie and Keith Parris.
Commissioner, District 3 – Incumbent Joe Cowan and Darrell Fox.
Commissioner, District 4 – Democrats Mark Jones and Nathan Moss; Republican Geoff Higginbotham.
School Board, District 2 – Incumbent Ken Henke.
School Board, District 4 – Incumbent Ali Laird-Large.
School Board, District 5 – Tracie Rice.
Two local candidates have filed for state legislative seats.
They are incumbent Democrat Phil Haire for House District 119 and Republican Mark Crawford for Senate District 50.
