Neslen places fourth at state tournament
Smoky Mountain’s George Neslen finished fourth in the State 1-A/2-A Wrestling Meet held Friday and Saturday at Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem.
Neslen ended the year 35-3. Two of the losses were in the state tourney. His other defeat was in the regionals, and he avenged that loss in Winston-Salem.
Smoky Mountain’s George Neslen finished fourth in the 160-pound division of the State 1-A/2-A Wrestling Meet last weekend at Winston-Salem.
Wrestling at 160 pounds, Neslen lost a decision in his first match to drop to the consolation round.
He then won three straight decisions, including a victory over Pisgah’s Drew Hall, who had defeated him in the regionals. Neslen had defeated Hall in regular season and tournament action.
“Since the last match of the regular season, George has been wrestling with a broken Hand,” Coach Chuck Beane said. “He’s really gone above and beyond just wrestling with it, much less finishing fourth in the state. He’s shown a lot of heart to go as far as he did.”
SM’s T.J. Bradley lost both of his matches at 215 pounds.
“It’s a great achievement just to make it to state,” Beane said.
