WCU’s softball team sweeps home openers
Commemorating the opening of the new, on-campus softball facility, Western Carolina swept a Sunday doubleheader defeating S.C. State 10-0 in five innings and 7-1 in seven.
Allyson McCubbins was three of six on the day with doubles in both games. Heather Pritchard went two of four with three RBIs.
Doubles by McCubbins and Fowler produced a run in the first inning of the opener. Two errors and three walks helped the Lady Cats (3-1) go up 4-0.

Stephanie Beatty had a home run in the second. A series of walks helped turn the game into a rout.
Mendy McKenzie (2-0) was the winning pitcher and was named conference pitcher of the week. She struck out nine while yielding three hits and a walk.
WCU scored all its runs in the first three innings of game two to complete the sweep. Lauren Ross, the league’s player of the week, had an RBI double in the first. McCubbins had an RBI single, and another run scored on an error making it 3-0.
McCubbins’ double started a four-run third. Samm Keppel and Heather Pritchard had RBI singles, and two runs scored on errors
Emerald Freeman homered in the seventh for the Lady Bulldogs’ run.
Jenny Jackson (1-0) picked up the win. She yielded five hits and three walks with one strikeout.
