FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY BOOKSTORE, which is located across Main Street from The Sylva Herald has marked down all sale books to 5 cents. Reduced-price books include many self-help and religious titles along with fiction and other non-fiction books. “Stop by and stock up,” a Friends spokesman said.


AUTHENTIC CAROLINA SHAG LESSONS are available each Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Rusty Lizard. Janet Sutton, who has been shag dancing for 20 years, is the teacher. Cost is $5 per session. For more information, call Sutton at 349-4277.


NARFE TO MEET – The Smoky Mountain Chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association will meet at noon on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Lambuth Inn at Lake Junaluska. The chapter serves Jackson and other Western North Carolina counties. Terri Davis will present a musical program. Federal employees with five years of service are eligible to join. HARRIS REGIONAL HOSPITAL AUXILIARY THRIFT SHOP volunteers need help with a few special items for their new store that are beyond their budget. These will be permanent store fixtures and will be identified with the contributor’s name. They do not have to be new and the items will not be for re-sale. The items are two wooden bookcases (2 feet wide by 8 inches deep by 7 feet high), two wicker rockers, two adjustable floor lamps, one oval braided rug (5 feet by 8 feet), a refrigerator, a kitchen table with four chairs, a vintage wicker or wood bassinet or cradle, a small dresser, a coat rack, an old wooden ladder, a wooden fireplace surround, a headboard, various ladies old hats, two benches, and a computer. The auxiliary will also accept the dollar equivalent of any of the above. STORYTIME AT CITY LIGHTS on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. will feature an Angelina Ballerina theme. Fans of all ages are invited to attend. For more information, please call Jenifer Ross at City Lights at 586-9499.


HERBAL WORKSHOPS – The Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department is still taking registration for two different herbal workshops, and space is still available in both. The Herbal Pantry class will be offered Tuesday, Feb. 28 from 6 until 8 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room at the Community Service Center. Participants will learn how to use herbs in everyday cooking and how to prepare herbal tea blends, bread and butter, and many other recipes. Aromatherapy will be offered Thursday, March 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the same location. Participants will learn many practical uses of essential oils and how to make body care treatments. Cost for each is $20; space is limited to 20 participants. Registration is under way at the Rec Center in Cullowhee. Phone registrations will not be accepted. For more information, call 293-3053.


CADES COVE ROAD in Great Smoky Mountains National Park will be closed to motorists for one week, Monday, Feb. 27 through Sunday, March 5, to replace a collapsed stream crossing the south side of the 11-mile, one-way road, weather permitting. Hikers and bikers will be allowed access to most of the road during the week’s closure. The work to replace a water ford will be located near the exit of the Loop Road, just past Sparks Lane. Those visitors will be required to exit via the two-way gravel Sparks Lane, which will detour visitors back through the entrance to avoid the construction activity.
