Then and now
The almost-completed N.C. National Guard Armory is shown in the top photo, which was printed in The Sylva Herald on Nov. 26, 1964. Construction began in June 1964, and the structure cost $147,486.26. Jackson County’s portion was $24,841.98. The road seen in the left background leads to the then new Jackson County Industrial Education Center, which we know now as Southwestern Community College. SCC, which began classes that same fall, celebrated its 40th anniversary during the 2004-05 school year. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove |
