Taylor sees results of federal dollars
U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor (R-Brevard), right, and Wes Bonds, assistant professor of chemistry, watch as Western Carolina University chemistry students Karla Wright of Monroe, left, and Jesse Walsh of Cashiers, back, conduct an experiment in a campus laboratory outfitted with scientific equipment purchased with federal funding. The equipment includes a DNA sequencer and a confocal microscope, which uses lasers and computer technology to create 3-D digital images of cells. Tuesday’s demonstration included the creation and transmission of digital images via the confocal microscope of cells from an unhealthy grape to Appalachian State University, which is developing a program in viticulture (grape and wine agriculture), and an explanation of some of the steps in processing the DNA of red oak tree cells. Taylor was instrumental in securing federal funding for the high-tech lab equipment. |
