SM’s Neslen, Bradley qualify for state meet

Two Smoky Mountain wrestlers will compete in the State 1-A/2-A Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem.

George Neslen placed second in the regionals at 160 pounds, and T.J. Bradley was fourth at 215. The regionals were held Friday and Saturday at North Henderson.

Neslen lost for the first time this season in the regional finals.

“George wrestled a guy from Pisgah he had beaten three times,” Coach Chuck Beane said. “It was a 2-1 match. The guy made a move on him with about 15 seconds left.”

Neslen had a bye in the first round. He advanced to the finals with a pin and a technical fall.

Bradley opened the tournament with a pin before being decisioned and falling into the consolation round. He pinned his next opponent then lost by decision in the consolation finals.

“They’ve got some tough competition,” Beane said of what Neslen and Bradley will be facing in Winston-Salem. “I think they’ve got as good a chance as anybody. If T.J. avoids mistakes, I believe he has a very good chance. If I had to bet on anybody in the tournament, I would bet on George.”
