Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Albert Welch

Albert Frederick Welch, 90, of Sylva, formerly of Salisbury, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, in the chapel of Lyerly Funeral Home with the Revs. Paul Christy and Phyllis Glahn officiating. Burial was in Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury.

He was born May 18, 1915, in Macon County, and attended Macon County schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a night watchman with Southern Railway and later retired after 25 years as a mail carrier. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Salisbury and Sylva First United Methodist Church. He was a son of the late Wilburn and Alice Kimsey Welch.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Wagner Welch, who died Nov. 10, 1999.

Surviving are one son, Frederick Michael “Mike” Welch of Salisbury; two daughters, Pat Welch Allen of Tarboro and Terry Leigh Welch of Sylva; two brothers, Paul Welch of Franklin and Louis Welch of Jefferson City, Tenn.; three sisters, Maude Baldwin and Muriel Welch, both of Franklin, and Joanne Hedrick of Charlotte; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Harold Howcroft

Harold Howcroft, 89, of Cashiers, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at a later date.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in World War II. He enjoyed playing tennis and golf, listening to old jazz music, gardening, and photography. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sterling, N.J., where he was a lifetime deacon, and was active in the senior center in Cashiers. He was the son of the late Ernest Edwin Howcroft and Margaret Jane Woods Howcroft.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Bonnie Howcroft; one son, William Edwin Howcroft of Boston, Mass.; one daughter, Nancy Jane Therrien of Seneca, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Mildred Thutt

Mildred Taylor Morgan Thutt, 89, of Griffin Street, Sylva, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, at Autumn Care Nursing Center after a brief period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at Sylva First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bill Serjak officiating. Burial was in Dills Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Chris Hess, James McManus, Jeff Morgan, William Murajda, Pat Patten and Tommy Thompson.

Honorary pallbearers were Charles Hess, Tom Mason, Tom Tabor, Barry Woods and Blair Yount.

She was a native of Laurens, S.C., and had lived in Western North Carolina for more than 60 years. She was a registered nurse, graduating from the School of Nursing Medical University of South Carolina and Public Health Nursing Education in Richmond, Va. She was also a licensed embalmer, graduating from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, Cincinnati, Ohio. She served as 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army Air Corp Hospital during World War II. She held many nursing positions in several WNC hospitals and retired in 1979 from the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Oteen. She was a member of Sylva First Presbyterian Church, where she had served as deacon and elder and was active in women’s organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Thutt, who died in 2000.

Surviving are one daughter, Anne Thutt Nicholson of Sylva; two sons, Paul Morgan Thutt of Hillsboro, Ore., and Thomas Russell Thutt of Kinston; one sister, Sara Davis of Cummings, Ga; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Mary Jay Patton Center, Sylva First Presbyterian Church, 28 Presbyterian Drive, Sylva, NC 28779.

Rachel Fleming

Rachel Walker Fleming, 58, of Shepherd Squirrel Drive, Cherokee, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after an extended illness.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at Yellow Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Shane Danner and Red Bradley officiating. Burial was in Yellow Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were William Bird, Shane Tarlton, Tony Long, Jody Saunooke, Fred Squirrel, Brian Wood and Bobby Patrick.

A native of Union County, S.C, she had lived in Jackson County for the last 15 years. She enjoyed cooking and was a member of Rockdale Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Converse Gart Barnes and Evelyn Walker Patrick.

She was also preceded in death by her first husband, James Baker; a twin sister, Shirley Walker; and one son, Johnny C. Baker.

Surviving are her husband of seven years, Thomas Duane Fleming; two daughters, Ann Hegler and Angel Squirrel, both of Cherokee; one son, James Scott Baker of Ruby, S.C.; three sisters, Ruth Patrick of Sylva, and JoAnn Hunter and Irene Patrick, both of Chester, S.C.; five brothers, Bobby Ray Patrick, Mike Patrick and Carl Patrick, all of Chester, Eddie Patrick of Union, S.C., and Roy Patrick of Clinton, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Frank Woodard

Frank B. Woodard, 85, of Franklin, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home with the Revs. Mark Bishop, Wesley Hooper, Tommy Fouts and Mike Fox officiating. Burial was in Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Chad Kirkland, Brian Moffett, Louis Thurman, Greg Mason, Chris Mason and Josh Pope.

Born in Jackson County, he lived the last 20 years in the Holly Springs community. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church for more than 75 years and retired in 1982 from the N.C. Department of Transportation. He was a son of the late John Cleveland Woodard and Ruth Higdon Woodard.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Leman Woodard.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Jennieve Mason Woodard; five daughters, Ruby Kirkland, Shirley Hyatt, Beverly Mason, Betty Gates and Kathy Woodard all of Franklin; one sister, Mae Buchanan of Sylva; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Esley Brooks

Esley Brooks, 74, of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., died Monday, Feb. 6, at Arlington Hospital in Arlington, Wash.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, in the chapel of Weller Funeral Home of Arlington. Interment was in Valley View Cemetery in Silvana.

He was born Feb. 13, 1931, in Whittier. He was a member of two black powder clubs, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a son of Floyd and Margaret Brooks.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Olene Cable Brooks; four sons, Dennis Brooks, Kirk Brooks, Steve Brooks and Russell Brooks; two daughters, Janice Harvey and Iris Morrison; three sisters, Betty Nations, Amie Hall and Stella Mae Buchanan; one brother, Lewis Brooks; and six grandchildren.



Carroll Rigdon

Carroll Rigdon, 66, of Eight Point Drive, Sylva, died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville after a brief illness.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at Faith Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Gene Hawkins and Tommy Madden officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Jay Rigdon, Charles Rigdon, Clay Rigdon, Chuck Middleton, Jason Sherrill and Scott Dowis.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from Champion Papers and was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a son of the late Frank and Rosetta Middleton Rigdon.

He was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Joseph Edward Rigdon.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Cindy Revis Rigdon; one son, Joe Rigdon of Sylva; and two brothers, Arnold V. Rigdon of Tignall, Ga., and Franklin D. Rigdon of Sylva.

Memorials may be made to Faith Baptist Church Paving Fund, P.O. Box 9, Webster, NC 28788.

Peggy Warriner

Mary Alice “Peggy” Reed Warriner, 75, of Venice, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, in Venice.

Services were held in Florida. She will be buried in Old Field Cemetery at a later date.

She was a native of Sylva’s Beta community, but lived most of her life in Florida. She was a daughter of the late Gordon and Ruth Reed.

Surviving are three sons, Bobby Dalton of Tennessee, and Stephen Rivas and George Warriner, both of Florida; two daughters, Constance Chapman of North Carolina and Janice Brooks of Florida; two brothers, Robert and Bill Reed, both of Florida; one sister, Betty Kinsland of Franklin; and several grandchildren.



Amaya Mathis

Amaya Grace Mathis, 8-week-old daughter of Lindsay Hope Mathis of Sylva, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Clifford Parker officiating. Burial was in Mathis Cemetery.

Pallbearers were her nephews.

She was born Dec. 21, 2005, in Buncombe County.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her maternal grandparents, Cornelius and Linda Mathis of Sylva; and maternal great grandmothers, Ocie Prince of Whittier and Icelene Price of Tuckasegee.
