Lady Mustangs start 2-A sectional playoffs

Smoky Mountain’s undefeated women’s basketball team, now ranked second in the latest state 2-A poll, was scheduled to open the 2-A West Sectional 3 playoffs at home at 7 p.m. Wednesday against North Surry.

Results were not known at Herald press time.

The Lady Mustangs (25-0) received a first-round bye after winning the Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles.

North Surry (23-4), the second seed from the Mountain Valley Conference, opened the sectionals Monday with a 41-26 win over West Davidson. The Lady Greyhounds are ranked ninth in the state.

Wednesday’s winner will play at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the sectional finals at East Burke. The opponent will be East Rutherford (17-6), the top seed from the Southwestern Conference, or Ashe (17-8), the Mountain Valley’s third seed.

The sectional winner will advance to the Western Regionals set for Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem from Feb. 28 through March 4. When the sectional 3 winner will play won’t be known until pairings are announced Sunday.
