Filing period for local elected offices to close Tuesday
Commissioners, sheriff, clerk to see contested primary races

Filing for political offices in Jackson County will conclude at noon Tuesday, Feb. 28.
As of Wednesday morning, five candidates have filed since last week’s report.
Jimmy Ashe is seeking re-election as sheriff. Elaine Carter is running for clerk of court, and Bob Ginn and Tom Massie are candidates for the District 2 commissioners’ seat. They are all Democrats.
Tracie Rice has filed for the District 5 school board seat, which is a non-partisan race.
Contested Democratic primaries are now assured for sheriff, clerk of court and four commissioner seats.
Candidates who previously filed, all Democrats, include:
District 1 commissioner, Raymond Bunn and William Shelton; District 2 commissioner, Miguel Baerga; District 3 commissioner, incumbent Joe Cowan and Darrell Fox; District 4 commissioner, Mark Jones and Nathan Moss; commissioners’ chairman, incumbent Brian McMahan; sheriff, Jim Cruzan; clerk of court, incumbent Ann Melton; and register of deeds, incumbent Joe Hamilton.
Ken Henke was an early filer for re-election to the District 2 school board set.
Two local candidates have filed for state legislative seats.
They are incumbent Democrat Phil Haire for House District 119 and Republican Mark Crawford for Senate District 50.
