Appalachian breezes by Western Carolina
All five starters scored in double figures as Appalachian State claimed an 83-66 Southern Conference victory over Western Carolina before 2,743 fans in the Ramsey Center on Feb. 13.
D.J. Thompson led the way with 17 points. He was followed by Nathan Cranford with 16, Jeremy Clayton with 15, Douglas McLaughlin-Williams with 12 and Demetrius Scott with 11.
Western’s Corey Muirhead led all scorers with 28 points, and Trey Hopkins added 11.
The Mountaineers shot 58.1 percent from the field while holding WCU to 37.3 percent.
The Catamounts held a 7-2 lead after Muirhead’s three-point play with 16:24 left in the game, but things quickly went down hill.
ASU reeled off 14 straight points, the last 10 by Cranford, for a 16-7 lead at the 13:19 mark.
The Mounties were up 42-25 at intermission as Eduardo Bermudez converted a three-point play with 10 seconds left.
The game’s biggest lead was 46-25 on Clayton’s layup at the 18:18 mark.
The Cats scored 11 consecutive points narrowing the gap to 51-42 following Muirhead’s dunk with 11:11 on the clock.
McLaughlin-Williams hit a pair of three-pointers helped push the lead back to 59-42 at the 9:12 mark.
Western made another run cutting the deficit to 65-57 on Muirhead’s dunk with 3:45 to play.
Appalachian regained control with an 11-1 spurt, including seven by Scott, for a 76-58 advantage on two Thompson foul shots at the 1:08 mark.
The Mounties held a 36-32 rebounding edge. They were led by Clayton with nine while Muirhead topped Western with six.
ASU won despite 18 turnovers while the Cats had only eight.
Completing the WCU scoring were Antonio Russell with eight, David Berghoefer and Eric Wilson with six apiece, Negus McKenna with five and Jared Outing with two.
