Political filing period attracts several candidates on first day

The Jackson County Board of Elections Office was a busy place Monday when filing opened for county offices.
The filing period will continue through noon Tuesday, Feb. 28.
Two county residents have filed for legislative races. Democrat Phil Haire is seeking re-election to the State House from District 119. Republican Mark Crawford is running for the State Senate from District 50.
School Board Chairman Ken Henke has filed for another term as the board’s representative from District 2. The school board race is non-partisan.
All other candidates filing are Democrats. Incumbents who have filed include:
Brian McMahan, commission chairman; Joe Cowan District 3 commissioner; Ann Melton, clerk of court; and Joe Hamilton, register of deeds.
Others to file include:
Jim Cruzan, sheriff; William Shelton and Raymond Bunn, District 1 commissioner; Miquel Baerga, District 2 commissioner; Darrell Fox, District 3 commissioner; and Nathan Moss and Mark Jones, District 4 commissioner.
