Melvin Kirkham
Melvin Lee Kirkham, 78, of Orange City, Fla., died Saturday, Feb. 4, at Florida Hospital in Deland, Fla.
Services were held Thursday, Feb. 9, at Constantino Funeral Home in Deland. Burial will be held at a later date.
He moved to Orange City from Norwich, Conn., in 1982. He was a former merchant mariner and a retired truck driver. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 493 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8093. He enjoyed fishing and boating.
Surviving are four sons, Richard of Winter Springs, Fla., Michael of Blackhawk, S.D., Kerry of Missoula, Mont., and Eric of Norwich; four daughters, Margaret DeRico of Sylva, Patricia “Brandy” Dickerson of Austin, Texas, Susan Bonnell of Center Harbor, N.H., and Stephanie Bowie of Norwich; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Teresa Schaad
Teresa Ann Schaad, 81, of Sylva, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, she graduated from Notre Dame College in June 1945. She went to work for her father, an electrician, after a move to Lake Worth, Fla. A former member of Dogwood Crafters and Home Extension Society, she enjoyed making crafts, metal work and reading. She also was an active member of her church.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Larry Schaad; two sons, Laurens Ferdinand Jr. and Thomas Anthony; three daughters, Brigid Anne, Gerrianne and Mary Geralyn; and five grandchildren.

Geneva Tooni
Geneva Cucumber Tooni, 94, of Cherokee’s Big Cove community, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at her residence.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at Piney Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. James “Bo” Parris and Charles Ray Ball officiating. Burial was in Cucumber Family Cemetery.
A native of Cherokee, she was a daughter of the late James and Lizzie Reed Cucumber.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Russell Tooni, and one grandson.
Surviving are one daughter, Ruth Lossiah of Cherokee; two sons, Russell and Norman Tooni of Cherokee; one sister, Frances Cucumber of Cherokee; three brothers, Johnny, Ed and Dave Cucumber, all of Cherokee; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Darek Hinote
Darek Hugh Hinote, 8, of Plateau Ridge, Cashiers, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a lifelong illness.
Services were held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Benny Bagwell officiating.
A native of Lakeland, Fla., he had lived in Jackson County most of his life. He was in the second grade at Cullowhee Valley Elementary School. He was a son of Hugh and Teresa Lynn Hinote of Cashiers.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his grandparents, Dorothy Averett of Lakeland, Christina Crowell of Bartow, Fla., and Walter Stephen Crowell II of Mulberry, Fla.; and great-grandmother, Edith Dalton of Brooksville, Fla.

Arnold Kovin
Arnold V. Kovin Jr., 54, of Cullowhee, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, from injuries sustained in a work-related automobile accident.
He was born March 3, 1951, in St. Louis, Mo., and was raised in San Diego, Calif. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1971 to 1976, and began working with the National Park Service in 1976 at Grand Canyon National Park. He met his wife, Jeanne, while they were both employed at the park, and they were married on the rim of the canyon.
In 1994, he took a position at Crater Lake National Park and he worked there until 1997. He then moved to Rohnert Park, Calif., where he was employed at Point Reyes National Seashore Park. He worked at Great Smoky Mountains National Park from 2002 until his death. During his time with the National Park Service, he received several awards for various accomplishments. He was chosen to make three successive trips to Tanzania to train and work with employees at the Arusha, Lake Manyara and Tarangire national parks and Ngorongoro Crater. He enjoyed being outdoors and taking hikes with his family.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Chris; one daughter, Melissa; his father, Arnold Kovin Sr.; two brothers, Ken and John; and two sisters, Kathryn and Jennifer.
Memorials may be made to Chris Kovin, 8409 148th St. Ct. E., Puyallup, WA 98375. Donations will be used to establish memorials at Grand Canyon National Park, Point Reyes National Seashore and Friends of the Great Smoky Mountains for scholarships to the College of African Wildlife Management.

Genoa Stephens
Genoa Stephens, 70, of Tobacco Road, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, in Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Sparks officiating. Burial was in Balsam Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Kenny Nicholson, Marvin Wilkes, Bill Hoyle, Matt Barden, Warren Dupree and Cameron Stephens.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Cullowhee Fire Department.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she retired form Western Carolina University as a secretary. She was a member of Woodland Church of Christ, and enjoyed quilting and crocheting. She was a daughter of the late Eular and Cellie Phillips Stephens.
Surviving are one daughter, Dawn Stephens Caudle of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one son, Chet Stephens of Cullowhee; one brother, Clint Stephens of Waynesville; and three grandchildren.
