WAC tourney will be played here next week
The Western Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament will be played next week at Smoky Mountain.
The event will featured men’s and women’s varsity and JV teams.
A meeting was scheduled Friday, following the completion of the regular season, to determine seedings.
The tourney will include four games each day. The JV women will begin at 4 p.m. followed by the JV men, varsity women and varsity men.
Monday’s games will be between the fourth and fifth seeds with seeds three and six playing Tuesday.
Semifinals will start Wednesday with the top seeds playing Monday’s winners and continue Thursday with the second seeds meeting Tuesday’s winners. Finals are set for Friday.
The Lady Mustangs (7-0, 22-0) will try to cap the second perfect regular season in school history at Pisgah tonight (Thursday). They must win to capture the WAC title outright. A Pisgah win would force a tie and mean the top seed for the sectional playoffs would be determined in the league tournament.
SM had a two-game lead in the standings, but Pisgah moved back within a game when West Henderson had to forfeit all of its wins due to the use of an ineligible player.
The Pisgah men, the defending state 2-A champions, will be trying for their 50th straight win against the Mustangs (1-6, 6-16).
The Lady Mustangs defeated West Henderson 70-55 Tuesday behind 30 points from Cetera DeGraffenreid. Ashley Robinson added 14, and Ashley Coggins had 11.
The Mustang men dropped a 54-47 decision. Tyson Crawford and Martin Davis had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Details of those games will be in next week’s Herald.
