Undefeated Neslen wins conference wrestling title
Smoky Mountain’s George Neslen won the Western Athletic Conference wrestling championship in the 160-pound weight class Friday at East Henderson.
Neslen ran his record to 30-0, according to Coach Chuck Beane. After a first-round bye, Neslen decisioned two opponents on his way to the title.
Smoky Mountain’s Joey Cox (top), shown in a match earlier this season, finished third in the 130-pound weight class at Saturday’s Western Athletic Conference Wrestling Tournament.
“He had an outstanding performance and really came through for us,” Beane said. “They were close matches, but he’s probably the toughest kid we’ve got.”
Three Mustangs placed third in their weight classes. They were Joey Cox, Steven Gates and T.J. Bradley.
Cox lost his first match by decision at 130 then won two decisions in the consolation round.
Gates was pinned in his opening match at 145 before recording a pair of pins to finish third.
Bradley was decisioned to open the action at 215. His only other match was a pin in the consolations.
“Everybody wrestled well,” Beane said. “Joey was in an extremely tough weight class. “T.J. was wrestling some strong opponents too.”
The Mustangs finished last as a team. Beane said they had several wrestlers who did not compete due to injuries or illnesses.
The Western 2-A Regionals are set for Feb. 17-18 at North Henderson.
